Excellent text and great illustration a great book for 3-5 year olds. I work with children from 2 years old and up and they love 'The Gruffalo', i haven't found one that doesn't. They love repeating all the words and looking to see what animal it is. Defintely one of the most read books at storytimes.
"There's no such thing as a Gruffalo"..........or is there? This masterpiece must be an all time classic.
The rhyming verse and humour make this a favourite for child and adult alike. As a teacher I am always thrilled when this book is requested as children, young and old are always enthralled by the tale and illustrations. The descriptive language sparks imagination and when I see children in the play ground playing 'Gruffalo' and retelling the story in play I know we've hit a high.
Currently my 2 yr old sons favourite book - my husband and I fight to read the bed time story!
I love The Gruffalo and so do the children in my classes. It has wonderful descriptions of the characters - it is perfect as a stimulus for creating wanted posters or as a springboard for the class to describe themselves or other book characters. Julia Donaldson's rhyming text is, as always, wonderful, it would be perfect to use for rhyme activities, phonectic activities or word study. It is also simply a strong and appealing story - the mouse scares away potential predators by inventing a gruffalo, except the gruffalo turns out to be real! and he thinks he'd like to eat a mouse! So the mouse in turn leads the gruffalo back to the earlier characters. He convinces the Gruffalo that a mouse is the scariest creature in the woods and tricks him. It's a great plot.
