A new-look edition of the style bible from the 1960s written by French fashion guru Genevieve Antoine Dariaux, which provided the inspiration for Kathleen Tessaro's novel of the same name. An early version of "What Not to Wear", the book states that "Being beautiful is no guarantee of happiness in this world. Strive instead for elegance, grace and style." From accessories to zippers, Madame Dariaux imparts her pearls of wisdom on all things fashion-related - and also offers advice on other crucial areas in life from shopping with girlfriends (don't) to marriage and sex.
About the Author
Madame Genevieve Antoine Dariaux has spent most of her life in Paris, but now lives in the South of France. Even as a child she preferred to accompany her mother to the dressmaker’s rather than go to the movies. Her talent for design and making costume jewellery led her to open her own fashion house, and her success led eventually to Nina Ricci, where she was the directrice for many years.

This is a charming book, and beautifully written. Even though it was first published in 1964, it is still relevant today. A must for those who wish to achieve more in society than a nice wardrobe and a pair of Loboutin's! Still very European in style, and perhaps some tips are a little outdated.
However, such is the power of Madame Dariaux's word, as soon as the first page was turned, I began to sit up straight, and instantly reassessed my wardrobe.
The main theme is that elegance can not be bought, but you must try to buy the best you can afford, 'investment pieces', as Ms Dariaux refers to them.
This book reminds me of My Fair Lady, and gives an inside glimpse into the world of the well-bred Society set.
As society icons in these times consist of Paris Hilton, and Nicole Richie, I think every young girl should read this and have something to aspire to other than striking a pose!
