Based on award-winning research by the director of psychopharmacology at Harvard Medical School, "The Omega-3 Connection" introduces a safe and practical way to improve mental health. With simple recipes and sound advice, his book provides all the tools readers need to reap the many benefits of omega-3 fatty acids.
From The Publisher:
Managing depression safely, naturally, and without side effects
For years scientists have searched for a treatment to relieve the pain of depression and other mood disorders -- one that's safe enough for nursing mothers, children, and the elderly -- without the side effects associated with medicines like Prozac, Zoloft, and lithium. Thanks to Dr. Andrew Stoll's groundbreaking research, that search may well be over.
Stoll found that omega-3 fatty acids, already known for their importance in preventing heart disease, Crohn's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and cancer, also play a crucial role in mental health. They regulate and enhance mood, sharpen memory, and even aid concentration and learning. Though these remarkable substances are abundant in common fish oils and other foods, the average Western diet includes far too few of the most common sources. Fortunately, our deficient diets and attendant depression can be reversed. "The Omega-3 Connection" provides readers with all the information they need to restore their natural balance of omega-3 fatty acids, including
Which omega-3-rich foods to eat
The most effective over-the-counter supplements
How to integrate flaxseed and fish oils into diet and medication plans
Simple recipes, supplement doses and sources, and more

I found this book highly interesting.
From a functional perspective, the book gives you all you need to know (based on current research) on how to improve your mood, cardiovascular health, memory, and cognitive abilities through the use of natural supplements. If you have a depressive illness, or are interested in the book to give you a pointer in how to gain the benefits of omega-3, it guides you through this very well.
What it also does, is talks through the current areas of research about where omega-3's may benefit the brain or body, and quite clearly talks about areas that have not been investigated thoroughly enough yet.
It also talks about the history of omega-3 and the evolution of the human brain, and how there is a major disparity between our current diets and the type of diet that our bodies have been used to for 99.9% of our species existence.
If you are interested in the science behind its benefits, or you are just plain interested by this new discovery of nutrition and science, then this will give you a very broad foundation of knowledge of the different fields of health science that are investigating this substance.
The greatest thing that I have taken from this book, is that in modern affluent countries, omega-3 may be the longest standing dietary deficiency there has been for at least 100 years. The Western diet and livestock farming process are not reliable alone to meet this dietary requirement, and you may pay many different health consequences as a result.
I reccomend this book. First off the bat I have to say that I haven't read it, HOWEVER, I have been doing the diet. I have been depressed in cycles over the last ten years and since taking Thompsons 1000 salmon oil for the last six months I feel very different. I have much clearer thinking, a much brighter mood and I definately feel smarter. I would recommend fish oil to everyone, whether you're depressed or not. PS I take two a morning and two at night with one evening primrose oil morning and night to balance the omega-3s with the omega-6.
