This text argues that boys need to be parented in a different way from girls with their own very special psychological and physical make-up. Home, society and education have failed boys badly - and these failures lead to unhappy men who cannot fully become emotionally confident adults. The author, Steve Biddulph, goes on to assert that it is essential that boys spend more time learning about manhood from their fathers. Through the teen years a boy ideally needs a male mentor outside his immediate family to teach him the best way to live. Without these things boys can turn to alcohol, drugs and despair and fail to grow up into feeling, responsible adults. In this text, Biddulph provides advice on: the stages of boyhood; how a mother teaches about life and love; how schools need to change to be made a good place for boys; testosterone and how it changes behaviour; how to be a good father; and how to teach boys to have a caring attitude towards girls and sex.

Growing up in a family of girls, I had no idea what to expect when my first baby was a boy. This book gave me some great insights not only into how my son functions, but also into my husband. A fantastic guide for the parent of any boy who is just seeking to help them be themselves and grow up healthy and balanced. It's great to read a book that acknowledges that boys and girls approach life in general in different ways.
I have to say that I am always a little skeptical when I read any "parenting manual". I usually find them common-sense and vaguely irritating in the patronising tone that they take. However, this book was quite different. I bought it for my husband (who now has a son - after 4 daughters) and found that it offered some useful insights into how to approach the growth and development of a male child. It is well-worth a read, and is probably better to have on your bookshelf as opposed to a once-over from the library.
I purchased this book as my little boy has just turned 6 months old. I believe it to be so important to raise boys differently to girls... I have learnt this through my own personal experience.
Raising Boys was an easy book to read which gave great insight as a mother to the ways to be develop (not hinder!) my son's development. I was so impressed with Steve's writing, I have just commenced reading another of his books; The Complete Secrets of Happy Children and so far I am reading with the same enthusiasm I had for Raising Boys.
My husband has now commenced reading Raising Boys so we can hopefully assist our son into growing up to be a well developed and rounded young man.
A must read for mums and dads, or anyone involved in developing our men of the future!
This is a fantastic book and I highly recommend it to anyone with a son. It has given me new insight for parenting. Great ideas on discipline without shaming or blaming that assist the child in becoming a great decision maker and thinker.
It shows the importance of Dad's and male role models.
A very easy book to read and very thought provoking. :)
This is the best book I have ever read since becoming a parent to my two sons (and another boy on the way). To me, it reinforced what I already know. Everything was in plain english, I liked that it had a spot of humour and I really do feel like it improved my parenting skills and that I am a better mother for reading it. I borrowed this book from our local library a month ago, and knew I had to own it. Since reading it, my childrens behaviour has improved and I feel more confident.
I found this book very insightful more than anything else, and the fact that it is Australian-based is a major plus in my opinion. The description of the changing needs of boys and the stages they go through from birth to adulthood was such an interesting read, and totally invaluable. You will think more about how you interact and respond with your son on a daily basis after reading this book.
I loved this book. As a mother of two sons, I found it invaluable for gaining a better understanding of my boys. There are many things about boys that are devalued in our culture and this book points out the positives. I found the information about teststerone, and the times when there are extra bursts of it, very helpful. I also realised that I needed to leave more space for them and their father, without me always orchestrating everything! Steve Biddulph writes in a genuine, caring way, with a dose of humour as well. I have enjoyed all his books.
This is a great book and a must-read for anyone who has a son or wants to. It gives insight into the differences between boys and girls and how to adequately respond to those differences so that today's young boys grow into tomorrow's world leaders, good husbands and dedicated fathers. A great gift for anyone expecting a boy!
Hated this book. Thankfully borrowed it from the library first and didn't waste money buying it. Whilst some of the information may be useful his writing style of preaching you must raise your child this way or else your child will end up damaged for life turned me off. Agree with an earlier review that the he lumps all boys the same and provides no practical advice for parents for dealing with their own individual circumstances.
