– Customer review on 25/06/2006 This book is a really good read for those considering homeschooling. It has many encouraging anecdotes and bits of history which show that school is not the great thing it is commonly thought. It makes you realise that you can do a better job, in a fraction of the time, at home.
John Holt is the leading author on "unschooling". An educational philosophy based on the idea that children have an innate desire to learn and that they can be trusted to choose their own learning (the what, why, when & how of it). Parents are there to love, help, support, facilitate and accept the interests of the child.
This book does tend to get a bit overly wordy, so for those wanting a quicker introduction to unschooling, I would suggest Holt's smaller books. "Learning all the time" is my favourite.
