From a nationally respected educator, the author of "Punished by Rewards" and "The Schools Our Children Deserve," comes a provocative challenge to the conventional wisdom about raising children.
From The Publisher:
Most parenting guides begin with the question "How can we get kids to do what they're told?" and then proceed to offer various techniques for controlling them. In this truly groundbreaking book, nationally respected educator Alfie Kohn begins instead by asking, "What do kids need -- and how can we meet those needs?" What follows from that question are ideas for working "with" children rather than doing things "to" them.
One basic need all children have, Kohn argues, is to be loved unconditionally, to know that they will be accepted even if they screw up or fall short. Yet conventional approaches to parenting such as punishments (including "time-outs"), rewards (including positive reinforcement), and other forms of control teach children that they are loved only when they please us or impress us. Kohn cites a body of powerful, and largely unknown, research detailing the damage caused by leading children to believe they must earn our approval. That's precisely the message children derive from common discipline techniques, even though it's not the message most parents intend to send.
More than just another book about discipline, though, "Unconditional Parenting" addresses the ways parents think about, feel about, and act with their children. It invites them to question their most basic assumptions about raising kids while offering a wealth of practical strategies for shifting from "doing to" to "working with" parenting -- including how to replace praise with the unconditional support that children need to grow into healthy, caring, responsible people. This is an eye-opening, paradigm-shattering book that will reconnect readers to their own best instincts and inspire them tobecome better parents.

Anyone wanting to access some sound thinking on parenting as it relates to children as "people" should definitely read this...In fact it is actually an excellent books about good human relationships really! The book really helps you to understand the myth basis of so many "parenting" books, which tend to focus on behaviours and not the relationship with your child.
Lovely book. Well worth the read. It really makes you re-evaluate things identifying the way you were brought up and how that has shaped the way you may be parenting at the moment.
I have read (too?) many books about parenting and this has to be my all time favourite. The reader must enjoy reading about research and studies to appreciate this book. After being a parent for a while i reliesed that rewards/punishment didn't work and gave children an 'what's in it for me' attitude. It was great to have Kohn articulate why this is from many differing perspectives. The chapter on principles of unconditional parenting and the practises contained in it has provided an enormous boost to my parenting.
Kohn's approach to parenting intends to convey unconditional love at all times to children. To this end rewards and punishments are put aside - you won't find the naughty step or star charts advocated here. I found the book a frustrating read at times, bogged down in why Kohn thinks you shouldn’t use techniques that are widely advocated elsewhere without yet providing information on his way. I feel the man could sell ice to Eskimos, but I think this book is definitely food for thought and a good introduction to a completely new approach to parenting.
