I believe that this book is very shallow in what it has to offer. The notion that you can make uncontrollable events turn towards your favor just by "visualising success" or "visualising things how you want them to be", is totally ludicrous. This type of thinking will only set you up for feeling upset when they don't come to you.
What this book does is to teach you to "think positive" about what you want in life, mainly concentrating on material or external things such as success, money, relationships, etc. It encourages consumerism and the notion that you need money, possessions, a good job, etc. to be happy. Because it does not show you how to challenge your internalised value system, no matter how really successful you are you will still not be happy.
True success and happiness comes from logical positive thinking and in most cases not boiling down your self-worth to how well you achieve, how much money you have, who loves you, who approves of you, etc. The book completely misses the point that you have to just unconditionally accept yourself to be happy and more successful. Once you do this, you will be more likely to see things how they are and try your hardest no matter how things turn out. That is the formula for true success. What this book shows you is that you have to keep trying to concentrate on external things like money, achievement, love, etc. to "fulfill your dreams".
Telling people that if they want things so bad they will be more likely to happen is just going to keep fuelling their need for external things to artificially pump up their worth, and be more likely to be disillusioned and give up when things don't work out. Personally I think that more than anything this is more of a recepie for failure as it doesn't show you that your feelings, skills, circumstances and beliefs are the usual barriers to things working out or not. It will never show you the things that you need to be more productive or more happy.
If you want a good book that will help to make you more successful, or more importantly more happy, then try "A Guide To Rational Living" by Albert Ellis, or "Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy" by David Burns (or both).
In a lot of ways this book is a scam because it doesn't give you any useful skills. Don't expect it to change your life and maybe you'll enjoy it.
Please please please, do not buy this book. There is no secret. What this book presents is simply not true. You cannot "think" money into your bank, you cannot fight disease with positive thinking, and the universe will not give you what you want in life because of how you think about life. The only "secret" here is the secret of how to fleece thousands of vulnerable people of their hard earned money by writing a book that promises an easy path to prosperity. The first step you should be taking is by saving some money - don't buy this book. Let it fade away like all the other fads that preceded it.
I was given this book as a gift. I think the reason the book is called "The Secret" is because you wouldn't want anyone to know you are reading it!!
On a more serious note, the book follows the hallowed halls of the millions of other self-help books -repetitive, repetitive, repetitive! It is as if the contributors are trying to brainwash the readers by going over and over the same things.
However, I am an avid reader, and I always maintain, that if you can take one good idea away from a book, then the book has been worth reading. I am still trying to think of that one idea.......
This has to be one of the funniest books I have ever read, the author has skilfully taken an absolutely absurd notion and crafted it into a parody of a self help book. All those of you who have taken this oh so seriously have obviously missed the joke.
Sometimes something that is quite hard to do is presented as a very simple idea - I choose to live my life positively and know that doing so makes me 'rich' in many ways other than financially. Unfortunately, this book, being American, sees success in terms of what you have or can get and misses the point that it is who you are and what you do that is really important! Having said that some people will find it really helpful and maybe even inspirational. Read Eckhart Tolle if you are a real spiritual seeker.
Have you ever wanted more from life but didn't know how? The Secret is an inspirational read on how to turn your life into what you want it to be. I would say the fundamentals behind the idea are not too different to Tony Robbins' Personal Power series.
In the same way that Tony Robbins developed his system based on studying highly successful people, The Secret is based on the notion that throughout history, there has always been a group of high profile individuals who have used the secret (the law of attraction) to achieve their success.
"What the Bleep do we know?" is another book that I would say runs along similar lines. It explores the power of the mind over our lives.
I found this book a compelling read. Honestly, i purchased this book in order to see what the hype was about. Despite an initial hard to read beginning, i found it interesting and something that is definately worth a read!
Success is somethign that i feel everyone strives for, in many different areas and this book portrays that and definatley leaves you thinking about the things that you can do in order to lead a fulfilling successful life.
Even through all the hype and negative reviews from the public, i do recommend it.
Let's be honest for a moment... this is yet another self-help craze of the moment and it really falls flat. Just like the DVD, this promises a lot of insight in all advertising and promotion, yet it is nothing new. If anything, the only thing this is good for is evidence that you gave it a go like the rest of the masses. I would not recommend purchasing this, get it from the library instead if you really have to read it - or wait for it to be listed on an auction site or in the second hand book shop, I am preducting there will be hundreds.
What a load of rubbish...and we have heard it all before. It's just repetitive, repetive and repetitive. Are we really so desparate to believe in this
nonsense?
If a book was written about the seriousness of 'survival on this earth' and how we can change the world, how many people do you think would rush out to buy this book? Nowhere near as many people, or hardly anybody. No, we just buy "The Secret' and paint a bautiful picture of planet earth in our mind and how the planet will simply sort itself out. After all, all you have to do is 'believe' in it. Simple as that.
Have a good think about what is really important to you. When the planet is gone, finished, kaputt ...... all the money and success won't rescue you. Let us be happy, thankful and positive with what we have got.
The Secret is probably the book that has had the most influence on my career. Rhonda Byrne brings together many concepts that have been prevalent for many years - in the most easy to understand, clear and conscise manner. It is very entertaining to read (the Audio CD's are an all time favourite for my car) -and I constantly find new information in here as my awareness grows from other material.
As a result of reading the Secret, I went on to study personally with Bob Proctor in the USA and am enjoying being a Life Success Coach.
Some critics feel that the Secret makes success too simple - "there is more to success than simply the Law of Attraction". This is true - but does not detract from the power within the book. Once you have read this book, you can study further with other books.
