"The Help" is the phenomenal international bestseller (that inspired the Oscar nominated film) by Kathryn Stockett. Enter a vanished and unjust world: Jackson, Mississippi, 1962. Where black maids raise white children, but aren't trusted not to steal the silver...There's Aibileen, raising her seventeenth white child and nursing the hurt caused by her own son's tragic death; Minny, whose cooking is nearly as sassy as her tongue; and white Miss Skeeter, home from College, who wants to know why her beloved maid has disappeared. Skeeter, Aibileen and Minny. No one would believe they'd be friends; fewer still would tolerate it. But as each woman finds the courage to cross boundaries, they come to depend and rely upon one another. Each is in a search of a truth. And together they have an extraordinary story to tell..."The other side of "Gone with the Wind" - and just as unputdownable". ("The Sunday Times"). "A big, warm girlfriend of a book". ("The Times"). "Harper Lee's classic novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" has changed lives. Its direct descendent "The Help" has the same potential ...an astonishing feat of accomplishment". ("Daily Express"). Kathryn Stockett was born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi. After graduating from the University of Alabama, she moved to New York City, where she worked in magazine publishing and marketing for nine years. She currently lives in Atlanta with her husband and daughter. "The Help" is her first novel.

Reviews

What perfect timing for this optimistic, uplifting debut novel (and maiden publication of Amy Einhorn's new imprint) set during the nascent civil rights movement in Jackson, Miss., where black women were trusted to raise white children but not to polish the household silver. Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan is just home from college in 1962, and, anxious to become a writer, is advised to hone her chops by writing "about what disturbs you." The budding social activist begins to collect the stories of the black women on whom the country club sets relies--and mistrusts--enlisting the help of Aibileen, a maid who's raised 17 children, and Aibileen's best friend Minny, who's found herself unemployed more than a few times after mouthing off to her white employers. The book Skeeter puts together based on their stories is scathing and shocking, bringing pride and hope to the black community, while giving Skeeter the courage to break down her personal boundaries and pursue her dreams. Assured and layered, full of heart and history, this one has bestseller written all over it. (Feb.) Copyright 2008 Reed Business Information.

You'll catch yourself cheering out loud People

Stockett's (www.kathrynstockett.com) deep and complex debut novel, set in early 1960s Jackson, MS, is about three women drawn together to make a difference. In an unlikely, even dangerous, alliance, an upper-class white woman and two black maids collaborate to write a book about what it's like to be a black maid working for white families, raising white babies. Actresses Octavia Spencer, Bahni Turpin, Jenna Lamia, and Cassandra Campbell immediately pull listeners in, breathing life into this touching novel. Certain to become a book group classic and to be popular among fans of Sue Monk Kidd and Jodi Picoult. The Help is probably one of my all time favorite books (and the movie was good too), this had laugh out loud moments and moments of tears. Hard to put down for me. I felt it was a good insight into the times it was written about. Totally recommend this book and will be reading it again.

An amazing book you will enjoy from start to end. With in-depth characters that will charm their way into your heart and make you laugh out loud. Set in the early 60’s in the deep south of Jackson Mississippi the book covers the civil rights movement from the perspective of the middle aged African American domestic worker, and a young white women gunning for change.

Subtle hints to the ever changing attitudes, social structures, fashion and technology of the 1960’s bring beautiful detail to the story line and make this book an amazing read. 5 Stars!!

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 26/02/2011

I really enjoyed this book written about the stories of the black women who were the 'help' in southern usa in the 50s and 60s. It was very moving, how these women were integral to the lives of the white family they worked for and were often closer to the children they cared for daily, but were essentially invisible in terms of being thinking, feeling human beings. There was such a heavy burden placed on them, long hours, high expectations, lack of trust, and having to spend long hours away from their own family. All in all, a very sad but enjoyable and readable book.

The most moving and uplifting book I have read in years. I was actually moved to tears several times and have gained a deeper insight into the race problems of the USA, this time from the female point of view.

Favourite book for the year, This was so well written and so interesting. The character development and characters were intriguing and well fleshed out. I couldn't put it down and neither could the other 12 members in my bookclub. It illustrated the culture and attitudes of the time and the main characters fight for justice on behalf of the oppressed in her town. The book was believable, funny, sad and heartwarming. Highly recommended.
