When you read a lot of history books and theology books the name Byzantium (or Byzantine) crops up an awful lot. So what exactly was it? This book is the best introduction I know of. It doesn't try and give you a complete and utter history of the Byzantine Empire (all 1000 years of it) but rather takes a subject by subject approach, so that, piece by piece, you get a sense of the mindset of the empire, the art and culture and ethos of this empire. This book is wonderfully readable and highly informative. Really quite brilliant.
