Eric Chaline is a graduate of Cambridge and the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. After graduation, he was awarded a Mombusho (Japanese Ministry of Education) Scholarship to study in Osaka, Japan. Extending his stay in Japan for a further six years, he studied Zen Buddhism and the martial arts while working for Japan's leading publisher Kodansha Ltd in Tokyo as an editor, translator, and ghostwriter. Back in London, he worked as Japan editor on Macmillan's Grove Dictionary of Art, contributing two articles to this major history of art reference work. Upon completion of the Dictionary, he joined the staff of several men's lifestyle magazines as fitness editor and writer. This led to his first book commission, Tai Chi for Mind, Body and Spirit, published in 1998. He has since published a further 15 books, several of which have appeared in foreign-language editions. In 2008, he achieved a long-standing ambition to complete a PhD in sociology, with a study of minority sexual identities in the United Kingdom. He currently lives in London.
