'I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness...' The young Allen Ginsberg's raw, epic poem shines a terrifying strobe light on the reality of surviving as an 'outsider' 1950's America. The poem showcases a 'beatnik' way of life that was violently at odds with the conservative Cold War society of the time - it was even the subject of an obscenity trial in 1957 due to its references to drugs and homosexuality. The poem is so honest it is almost painful to read, the repetitive rhythms are powerful and hypnotic, and it gives us a glimpse of a repressive, paranoid America which (in some ways) hasn't changed much at all.
