This book kept me reading. I bought it because Stephenie Meyer recommended it. And I have to say, she has a great taste in books. When reading reviews and the blurb of the book the story didn't really capture my interest. But I persisted and I was not disappointed. The Hunger Games is riveting, I was at the end of my seat full of suspense. The romance aspect is heart aching. Collins is such an imaginative writer and I can not wait for Catching Fire to come out. I would have to agree with Stephenie Meyer: "The Hunger Games is amazing."
I really enjoyed this book, which is great because I didn't go into it expecting much. I love authors who use the 1st person narrative, so that was a bonus and I also enjoyed the entire concept of the book. I was very much reminded of Orwell's 1984 (which isn't a bad thing!), perhaps crossed with the movie Battle Royale (if anyone's seen it?). Katniss, despite her annoying name, is a great protagonist and I enjoyed her character development immensely. Collins has crafted a complex and interesting, if not unnerving world, that, while sometimes simplistic, I found convincing. Looking forward to the sequel!
There are not enough nice words I can say about this book. I honestly wouldn't know where to start, so let me just say this.
The Hunger Games is a very powerful book. It has great character development, a highly thrilling and unique setting/story and it has deeper, meaningful messages throughout it as well.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes anything along the lines of Survival, Love and War.
And let me just say, I love this hardcover edition of The Hunger Games the most. The actual book has a golden mockingjay imprinted on the front cover which is stunning.
A great read for Adults and teenagers alike, with action, suspense, Ive read this one and the sequels, with the first two books being the best in my opinion, great character in Katniss Everdeen as the heroine who goes against the reigeime -the Capitol, and great beleiveble characers I was transported into Collin's World, town of Panem, and bleak surrounds, where Survival of the fittest,in the Hunger Games. Has great themes about supporting others in times of adversity, grief, resilience, romance, greed, and has suspense, action, I found it very engrossing and quite addictive actually.
I had reservations about this book at first, as the premise sounded so much like Battle Royale and The Running Man that it was uncanny. However, I can assure you that The Hunger Games is quite different, though set in the same sort of dystopia - Suzanne Collins explores different ideas. The Hunger Games has something for everyone, whether they're fans of speculative fiction, romance, adventure, mystery, the list goes on. The book wasn't flawless -- I felt cheated a bit towards the conclusion, the phrase "deux ex machina" comes to mind. Still, I highly recommend it and cannot wait for its sequel, Catching Fire, to be released!
