Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen regards it as a death sentence when she is forced to represent her district in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV. But Katniss has been clse to death before--and survival, for her, is second nature. The Hunger Games is a searing novel set in a future with unsettling parallels to our present. Welcome to the deadliest reality TV show ever...

Reviews

Gr 7 Up--In a not-too-distant future, the United States of America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war, to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 12 districts. Each year, two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. Part entertainment, part brutal intimidation of the subjugated districts, the televised games are broadcasted throughout Panem as the 24 participants are forced to eliminate their competitors, literally, with all citizens required to watch. When 16-year-old Katniss's young sister, Prim, is selected as the mining district's female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart, Peeta, the son of the town baker who seems to have all the fighting skills of a lump of bread dough, will be pitted against bigger, stronger representatives who have trained for this their whole lives. Collins's characters are completely realistic and sympathetic as they form alliances and friendships in the face of overwhelming odds; the plot is tense, dramatic, and engrossing. This book will definitely resonate with the generation raised on reality shows like "Survivor" and "American Gladiator." Book one of a planned trilogy.--Jane Henriksen Baird, Anchorage Public Library, AK Copyright 2008 Reed Business Information.

In a far-future United States, a cruel Capitol keeps order by demanding an annual tribute for its Hunger Games, in which two contestants, a boy and a girl, are chosen by lottery from each of 12 districts to fight to the death in an event televised from an arena. Katniss Everdeen lives in what used to be Appalachia and is now called the Seam-a dirt-poor district without much hope of success in the games. Katniss volunteers in her sister's place and may just have the smarts to win. Then Peeta, the soft baker's son chosen from her same district, does something surprising. He declares his undying affection for Katniss just before they enter the arena. Is there room for friendship, loyalty, or even love when survival is on the line? Why It Is a Best: Collins's prose is merely serviceable, but she writes compelling characters and spins one terrific yarn. The premise is good to begin with, and the surprises keep coming. Why It Is for Us: In this fight to the death, the book's violence is cringe-worthy by even the most jaded standards. The exploitation of the desperate and impoverished for the entertainment of the wealthy and powerful is a theme reminiscent of Stephen King's The Long Walk or The Running Man. King himself makes the comparison in his Entertainment Weekly review of the book, saying "I couldn't stop reading."-Angelina Benedetti, King Cty. Lib. Syst., WA Copyright 2008 Reed Business Information.

If there really are only seven original plots in the world, it's odd that "boy meets girl" is always mentioned, and "society goes bad and attacks the good guy" never is. Yet we have Fahrenheit 451, The Giver, The House of the Scorpion-and now, following a long tradition of Brave New Worlds, The Hunger Games. Collins hasn't tied her future to a specific date, or weighted it down with too much finger wagging. Rather less 1984 and rather more Death Race 2000, hers is a gripping story set in a postapocalyptic world where a replacement for the United States demands a tribute from each of its territories: two children to be used as gladiators in a televised fight to the death. Katniss, from what was once Appalachia, offers to take the place of her sister in the Hunger Games, but after this ultimate sacrifice, she is entirely focused on survival at any cost. It is her teammate, Peeta, who recognizes the importance of holding on to one's humanity in such inhuman circumstances. It's a credit to Collins's skill at characterization that Katniss, like a new Theseus, is cold, calculating and still likable. She has the attributes to be a winner, where Peeta has the grace to be a good loser. It's no accident that these games are presented as pop culture. Every generation projects its fear: runaway science, communism, overpopulation, nuclear wars and, now, reality TV. The State of Panem-which needs to keep its tributaries subdued and its citizens complacent-may have created the Games, but mindless television is the real danger, the means by which society pacifies its citizens and punishes those who fail to conform. Will its connection to reality TV, ubiquitous today, date the book? It might, but for now, it makes this the right book at the right time. What happens if we choose entertainment over humanity? In Collins's world, we'll be obsessed with grooming, we'll talk funny, and all our sentences will end with the same rise as questions. When Katniss is sent to stylists to be made more telegenic before she competes, she stands naked in front of them, strangely unembarrassed. "They're so unlike people that I'm no more self-conscious than if a trio of oddly colored birds were pecking around my feet," she thinks. In order not to hate these creatures who are sending her to her death, she imagines them as pets. It isn't just the contestants who risk the loss of their humanity. It is all who watch. Katniss struggles to win not only the Games but the inherent contest for audience approval. Because this is the first book in a series, not everything is resolved, and what is left unanswered is the central question. Has she sacrificed too much? We know what she has given up to survive, but not whether the price was too high. Readers will wait eagerly to learn more. Megan Whalen Turner is the author of the Newbery Honor book The Thief and its sequels, The Queen of Attolia and The King of Attolia. The next book in the series will be published by Greenwillow in 2010. Copyright 2008 Reed Business Information.

Best series/ Book i have ever read.

I love everything about it. Besides the very last book... it has a sad ending to what i had expected.

But i LOVE the hunger games, and i know many people who have it as the best book they've ever read. I read the whole series in three days (1per day)

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 27/07/2011

I began Hunger Games with a definite lack of excitement. I had run out of books and decided I would read one given to me for Christmas. Boy how glad I was that I did! The trilogy was demolished in two days.
An absolute blockbuster of a novel, that combines a winning formula of adventure, intrigue and genuine thought. I finished the first novel and had to will myself to sleep as I was so excited to read the second. I will not give away plot detail but all I will say is buy this novel straight away! I dare you to put it down!

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 06/02/2011

I had read this book to see if it was suitable for my kids. I did not expect to love it! I read the entire series within 20 hours over the holidays... I just could not put each book down, and had to grab for the next one to see how it ended.

There's plenty of suspense, action and mildly gory violence for my son and just and a charming story of romance for my daughter. An excellent example of how young adult literature should be written: it's intelligent and gripping enough for adults (a.k.a. the parents) as well, and has valuable lessons about politics, ethics and morals for the kids.

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 06/09/2010

Now that all three books are available, this book is even more appealing. This is great book and the first of a great trilogy. If you're looking for a "can't put down" book, this is the first of three. Fantastic for kids or adults that like a good adventure tale.

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 13/04/2010

You wouldn't expect a book about a reality TV show set in the future to be the best book I've ever read. Katniss is a 16 year-old girl who is forced to enter, as a tribute, The Hunger Games in place of her sister. She considers it a death sentence, due to the one rule: Kill or be killed. But what happens when she starts to fall in love with another player? Read the book and find out. This exciting and thrilling book is a real page turner, and even my friends who would rarely pick up a book loved it. My favourite type of book is uaually fantasy. This amazing book had none, and still managed to blow my mind.

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 04/11/2009

This book had me on the edge of my seat
the whole time I was reading it. I read well into
the night and when I had finished it I wanted to read more.
Finding a good book series like The Hunger Games always gets me
excited. All the characters are well developed and the idea of a bunch
of people being chosen unwillingly and put into a dome to fight until there
is only one survivor while the whole world is watching them on TV is very original.
