Jamie Oliver will teach you to cook from scratch in...Jamie's Ministry of Food. Sixty years ago food was in short supply and malnutrition rates were high. The Ministry of Food was set up to teach the public how to make the best use of the food available to them. Fast forward to the present day, where we have unlimited choices and plenty of food, yet we're living in a world of junk food, additives and preservatives. Our war is now against obesity, as most people have little or no idea about how to cook and what makes a balanced diet. We need to learn from the past. We need to look back at the way our grandmothers and great-grandmothers cooked - wholesome, tasty food that was simple and quick to prepare. If you're a complete beginner in the kitchen, Jamie Oliver's promise to you is that you'll be making some great dinners within hours of reading his book. A little knowledge and a few basic tools can go a long way, and Jamie's Ministry of Food is your first step..."There is only one Jamie Oliver. Great to watch. Great to cook". (Delia Smith). Jamie Oliver's career started as a chef at the River Cafe, where he was quickly spotted by the television company that made him famous as The Naked Chef. He has since published a huge range of bestselling cookery books, including The Naked Chef, The Return of the Naked Chef, Happy Days with the Naked Chef, Jamie's Kitchen, Jamie's Dinners, Jamie's Italy, Cook with Jamie, Jamie at Home, Jamie Does, Jamie's Great Britain, Jamie's 30 Minute Meals, and Jamie's 15-Minute Meals.

About the Author

Jamie Oliver started cooking at his parents' pub, The Cricketers, in Clavering, Essex, at the age of eight, and quickly developed a passion for cooking which continued through his training at the Neal Street restaurant and The River Cafe. In 2002 he founded Fifteen restaurant in London and the associated charity the Fifteen Foundation, which continues to train disadvantaged young people to become chefs. There are now three other Fifteen restaurants in the world. Jamie has also recently started up the Jamie's Italian chain of high street restaurants. In 2005 Jamie led a campaign to improve the quality of school dinners in the UK and through the Feed Me Better campaign caused the government to substantially change its policy towards school food. Jamie continues to write for publications in the UK and around the world. He lives in London and Essex with his wife, Jools, and their daughters, Poppy and Daisy.

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 03/11/2008

As someone who has been a Jamie Oliver fan since Day 1. I own all of his cookbooks!!! This book is just wonderful. The photographs are fantastic. The stories that accompany the recipes are so friendly and inviting that you feel you're standing there talking with everyone. This is the kind of cookbook you pass down to your kids. It's a treasure in every respect.

Fantastic Love this book. Another brilliant cook book from Jamie Oliver. The recipes are so simple yet so tasty. One of my favourites for limited time cooking is the evolution carrot salad.

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 01/04/2009

I think this is the best of Jamie's cook books so far. The recipes aren't too daunting, generally use simple ingredients and are very well explained. My husband has already prepared a few meals from this book and the results were sensational! It covers basics from salads and omelettes, through to some really tasty curries.
The book encourages readers to master a few of the recipes and then pass them on to friends and family, and aims to build confidence in the kitchen so we eat more home cooked food and less takeaway. Thoroughly recommended!

This book is fantastic, not only did it encourage my husband to cook, but my father too, we bought it 2 days ago and he has cooked dinner for the family two nights running! Hooray for the ministry of food! (Sizzling beef in black bean and also the spaghetti bolognese were a winner with the whole family from 1 year old to 65 ! Trying the burgers and mexican corn tomorrow, cant wait!
Very straight forwards, really like the way it guides you through preparation and then cooking the dishes great for beginners or experienced cooks!

I love this book - new ideas and twists on basics, as it's packed full of recipes I'll make during the week. Having said that, it's focus is on English food so if you find that a bit stodgy this might not be for you.

It's great - really down to earth, 'normal' recipes but at the same time they all give the average meal a touch of sophistication. Uses ingredients we'd use over and over - highly recommended.

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 17/02/2009

I love this book! I can actually cook, but have trouble with what to cook, I waste alot of time staring into the freezer or panty trying to decide on a good meal to feed my family. This book has very basic meals but they are really yummy, with a spice added here and a fresh herb there the meals go from boring to great. I love the back to basics feel of the book as sometimes I feel I am the only person who doesn't know the correct timing to boil a hard or soft boiled egg. So now I go to this book and just about every page has something I would make, with ingredients that I have already. I feel this book will replace the edmonds as the book you give your kids when they leave home, great pictures and step by step instructions. You can't go wrong!
