Philip Yancey reveals the real Jesus beyond the stereotypes, revolutionizing the reader's passion for Christ, and offers a new and different perspective on the life of Christ and his work - his teachings, his miracles, his death and resurrection - and ultimately, who he was and why he came. Relating the gospel events to the world we live in today, "The Jesus I Never Knew" gives a moving and refreshing portrait of the central figure of history. Yancey looks at the radical words of this itinerant Jewish carpenter and asks whether we are taking him seriously enough.

Probably the best book I've ever read about Jesus. It is easy to access, full of interesting hystorical context and humourous anectdote, plus the whole thing is laced with Philip Yancey's cahrming honesty. I learned a lot about the context of the gospels. This book could easily be read by someone with no biblical knowledge, at the same time folk who know their bibles inside out would benefit from reading it.
A wonderful book that attempts to scrape through two thousand years of theological and traditional accretions to take a look at the Jesus presented in Scripture. Yancey considers Jesus's time and culture, his character and mission, his teachings and miracles, his resurrection and ascension. In time and space - Yancey looks at this figure - born a Jew, raised in Galilee - and the results are fascinating and challenging.
Yancey can be hard going for some readers. His work is full of literary allusions, allusions to current events, and honest & heartfelt descriptions of his own journey, his own doubts and fears.
Yancey was awarded the Gold Medallion Christian Book of the Year award for TJINK in 1996 by the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association (He won in 1998 also for "What's so Amazing about Grace?").
