I have given this book 3 stars but it was more like 3.5. It was slow to take off and the writing seemed clumsy at first and I found myself making inevitable unfavourable comparisons to J R Ward. After the first quarter however, the characters seemed to connect more, the story picked up pace and I really got into it, reading way past bedtime.
Another reason for the 3.5 is that Lucan rejects his feelings so much that the romance between him and Gabrielle whilst good, doesnt develop to its full romantic potential.
That said in the end I really enjoyed it and was glad to find another good author to read. Certainly, you really need to read this book if you think you might read the series. There is a fair bit of background in it.
What I liked about it was that it is a little different, having read others in the series (better and stronger than this reasonable first offering) - the Breed Warriors are less stylised than in the Black Dagger Brotherhood and more individual (not all buddies who hang) so they feel somehow more realistic. Just a pack of assorted hardmen lightly sketched, until each book reveals them. Also, they have less psychic powers and the characters are richer because of it eg: they need real life solutions to problems. (Cant just teleport in and save the day - adds complexity to the tale).
I also liked the fact that whilst they are vampires, they are not undead and that the 'breedmates' dont have to change to be with them. I kind of think the fact that most books in this genre where the female character is turned into a Carpathian or whatever - always seems pretty unlikely somehow. It also adds interest as Breedmates can go out in the day whilst the Breed Warriors have the usual sun up restrictions (no handy butler to get around them either).
If you only read 10 or so books a year - Kenyon, Feehan and Ward are all stronger writers. But if like me you read more than that, this is a good second string series to get into if you want a contemporary romantic, sexy read with increasingly
interesting subplots.

Lucan Thorne despises the violence carried out by his lawless brethren. A vampire himself, Lucan is a Breed warrior, sworn to protect his kind—and the unwitting humans existing alongside them—from the mounting threat of the Rogues. Lucan cannot risk binding himself to a mortal woman, but when Gabrielle is targeted by his enemies, he has no choice but to bring her into the dark underworld he commands.
Here, in the arms of the Breed’s formidable leader, Gabrielle will confront an extraordinary destiny of danger, seduction, and the darkest pleasures of all. . . .
I was disappointed in this book. There is nothing original. I did not feel any chemistry between the main characters. It was also full of inconsistencies, the heroine was described one way but I felt she acted contrary to that.
If you want vampires try Christine Feehan's Carpathians.

Lucan is a man you want to meet in a dark alley if your Gabrielle Maxwell. but not if your a Rogue. This story was along the lines of J R Ward and Sherrilyn Kenyon books but different in its own right. I loved this story i fell in love with the characters and i am getting ready to read the rest in this book series. lucan Thorne is a man you cant stop dreaming and thinking about way after you put the book down.

The first in the Midnight Breed series. The story revolves around the breed, a half alien and half human race of living beings. Close to looking like vampires except they are warm blooded and need a human female with the special birthmark to reproduce. They are called breedmates. This story is about the breed called Lucan who is a gen one breed, first born of an alien being. He is the leader of a group of breed called the order living in Boston who are out to vanquish all breed who turn into rogues through over feeding on human blood. Their role is to keep their identity secret from humans and keep the breed from annililating the human population. Lucan comes into contact with Gabrielle a breedmate who becomes unknowingly part of the world of the breed. Lucan falls for Gabrielle and their story is full of passion, caution, and sorting themselves out especially Lucan. I found the story along the same intensity as JR Ward but the breed in the order are less tense. Great read, good story.

This is the first of the Midnight Breed Series and one of my favourites...Lara Adrian is a great author, I love this series it is packed with action and romance. This book is about Lucan Thorne, leader of a group of vampire (breed) warriors who protect their breed and Gabrielle Maxwell who ends up in his world when she witnesses a murder outside a nightclub. The chemistry is sizzling between Lucan and Gabrielle and the action is fast paced, I couldn't put this down until I had finished it.

I think that Lara has a really great story line but she only skims the story. To be honest it is a better story line than the Black Dagger serious but the character left me cold. Couldn't get my heart into it not like the Black Dagger serious when it was aching all the time. It's hard not to compare with the Black Dagger serious as they are very similar. But keep reading the series as I found each book they do get better.
