This book isn't as easy going as some of the Christian books out there today. It lacks the light hearted approach of most American commentaries. In saying that this is a wonderful book that goes deeper than most. It covers topics such as the love of God, the wrath of God, the wisdom of God. It is definitely a book for study times of for dedicated devotional times, but it is well worth the effort.
Packer's work covers the importance of studying theology. It's divided into three parts: the first touches on the importance of studying theology; the second discusses a number of god's attributes; the third deals with our relations as creatures with the Creator.
Interestingly, Packer describes propitiation as "the heart of the gospel" - I have found Packer's description of propitiation incredibly helpful over the years, likewise his description of the wisdom of God.
However, it's more "Knowing about God" than "Knowing God"... still, an evangelical classic...
