Gr 6-9-In this fourth and final book in the series, Kel is now 18 and her knighthood is guaranteed after she passes her final test as a squire, which involves facing her fears and overcoming them while in the Chamber of the Ordeal. During the Ordeal, she has a vision of an ugly little man directing monsterlike, metal machines to kill children and use their souls to fuel them. She hears a voice telling her that her task is to find this "Nothing Man" and stop the killing, and she becomes determined to steal away, hunt him down, and destroy him. Orders dictate otherwise and Kel finds herself the Commander of a refugee camp for people who've lost their homes in the fighting between Tortall and neighboring Scanran. While she is away from camp, it is attacked and many refugees, mostly children, are kidnapped. She disobeys orders and rides off alone to try to save them. This meaty book has lots of fighting and challenges to Kel's authority, allowing her once again to prove that she is equal to the men. Her compassion for those weaker than herself and her strong leadership skills make her an appealing protagonist. All of the characters from the previous books are here, and Pierce neatly ties all the plot threads together in a way that should please her fans. She also provides a helpful list of characters and a glossary. This is an essential and satisfying book for anyone who enjoyed the others in the series.-Sharon Rawlins, Piscataway Public Library, NJ Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

kel leaves for war, expecting - as the Ordeal promised - that her path and the Nothing man's will cross. However, she soon finds herself shackled to a large refugee camp. She does not get to fight with her classmates, but instead is left babysitting a bunch of argumentative commoners - hundreds of miles away from anywhere the Nothing man could be. But things are not quite as she thinks...a truly brilliant end to the series.
This is the end of my favourite quartet from this author. Kel has finally succeeded in becomeing a Knight. It was all that she ever wnated. But now she has a task assigned to her by the Chamber of Secrets- to find the Nothing Man. She is torn whilst deciding wheter or not to follow these instructions- until something happens that changes the tide for good. Now it is no longer a matter of if for Lady Knight Keladry of Mindelin. It's a matter of Revenge.
Kel's finally a knight, and her fist duty is to command a refugee camp. It all goes well until her people get captured by the enemy. Now it's up to Kel and a handful of people in her command to get them back.
This was one of the best endings to a series, though there was a little bit of a let down, but I can't say what that was. You have to read it yourself and find out.
Hats off to Tamora Pierce with this last installment of Kel's series. Finally, she has her shield and is ready to become and hero, but Kel soon discovers herself in charge of a refugee camp instead.
I think I loved this series so much because Kel is an even more believable heroine than her predecessor knight, Alanna. With no magic or God's to aid her, Kel relies on her own training and instincts.
I found Pierce's portrayal of a medieval world at war very plausible with just enough fantasy thrown in to make it all the more enjoyable. I loved seeing Kel continue to grow as a character while I read. After reading the conclusion to her series, I find it difficult to keep on saying the Lioness Quartet is my favourite Pierce series!
I really enjoyed this series, and it is one of my favorite Tamora Pierce series. Kel is the most real of the heroines in the Tortall universe, being not Gifted, and accomplishing her goals with a great strength of will. I would have to say to the concerned parents of the world, that it isn't really reading for 8 year olds. But it also isn't written for 8 year olds anyway, but for young adults. AND it is doing a great disservice to not allow somebody to read her books when it is more appropiate for their age.
Another great book, pity its the last in this series. Kel has earned her shield but gets stuck being put in charge of a refugee camp. But here you see how talented Kel really is. Logistics are the hardest part of war, and that's what she's up to her ears in! You have to admire Pierce's research and the in and outs of running a large camp, organising soldiers and preparing defences are explored in detail, but in an interesting way.
yuk, the last book in this series really dragged on and at times i found it unbearable to read. there were so many boring scenes of action and war that i was jjust so bored, and often skipped ahead to what i thought were more exciting times. only read this if you have read others in the series as it will all tie up.
SOmetimes it is a curse to be pratical. istead of winning glory she is in charage of a rufugee camp. her plan to stop the man that puts children's spirits into metal machines is put on hold as she has to take on a role that adults twice her age still struggle with. When her refugee's are kidnapped she takes it persoanlly, disobeys orders and goes after them.
Kel has won her shield and instead of being sent to the heat of the battle as she wishes she is put in charge of a refugee camp. At first she thinks that she will not see any action but she is sorly wrong as she has to fight for her right as leader, and the protect the children that her foes are after.
The best its just a pity that it is the end of the protector of the small quartet!
the last of this series it doesn't quite feel finished but that might be because she doesn't hook up with anyone and I like nice and neat endings. Keldry is given her first command in this book but it isn't glamourous at all, refugees can be so demanding. Only the enemy kidnap her people and she has to find them and destroy the evil mage that is taking the souls of children to run his machines. this is a realistic adventure in the sense of fantasy as she doesn't get to deal with the end of the world or gets a glorious command. no this is gritty and I rather like that.
