A Discworld novel fully illustrated in lavish colour throughout its 160 pages, this is an essential part of any Discworld collection. It stars the legendary Cohen. He's been a legend in his own lifetime. He can remember when a hero didn't have to worry about fences and lawyers and civilisation, and when people didn't tell you off for killing dragons. But he can't always remember, these days, where he put his teeth ...So now, with his ancient sword and his new walking stick and his old friends -- and they're very old friends -- Cohen the Barbarian is going on one final quest. He's going to climb the highest mountain in the Discworld and meet his gods. The last hero in the world is going to return what the first hero stole. With a vengeance. That'll mean the end of the world, if no one stops him in time.

Reviews

Cohen the Barbarian, aka the Emperor Ghengiz Cohen, hero of 26 Discworld fables, and his Silver Horde go gentle into any good night? Never. Not even if they're held together by various elasticized supporters and forget where they left their false teeth. The gods unpardonably let Cohen and Co. succumb to old age, and the members of the Horde Boy Willie, Caleb, Truckle and Hamish, who's ("Whut?") stone deaf still want drink, treasure and women, even if they admit they've had to ease back on the last one. Cohen gets a bard to record their one last universe-defying hobble toward immortality, and old age has rarely been so gut-splittingly yet accurately portrayed here, embellished by Paul Kidby's wacky and wicked illustrations. The Horde's last quest is to return the fire Cohen stole long ago from Dunmanifestin, the gods' ultimate Good Address. Unfortunately, that will destroy the magic holding the world together, so Lord Vetinari of Ankh-Morpork "workshops" the situation ("the means by which people who don't know anything get together to pool their ignorance") and sends a dragon-powered vessel crewed by an inventor, a soldier, a wizard and an orangutan librarian to stop Cohen and his tottery Horde. Pratchett lets fly sly volleys at today's civilization and skewers nearly every barbarian-fantasy clich? rampant in too many books and films. This far-out farce rollicks along hilariously enough to make the inevitable aging process, if not palatable, at least worth a few good belly laughs. (Nov. 1) Forecast: You don't have to be a fantasy fan to appreciate the marvelous jacket art, depicting a skinny, bald, aged barbarian clutching a sword in one hand and a cane in the other. 5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 02/02/2007

The Last Hero a beautifully illustrated and well written offering from Terry Pratchett.

Follow the adventure of Cohen the barbarian in his quest to save the world, he has it all - followers, a quest, some rewards and oh yes now where did he put his dentures ??

Not as great a story as his other work, but added to the illustrations the story and characters and places come alive. And yep they do look like you imagined they would.

Packed with a storyline, Pratchetts dark humour, death and chaos - insanity rules as always in Discworld.

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 01/08/2008

I actually found this to be a refreshing offshoot from the discworld series (of which I am a huge fan) and absolutely adored the whole band of heroes. Pratchett wrote these guys with his usual gifted humour and fantasy-realism and had me cracking up over some of the jokes. The story is typical disc world satire but its the characters and their insane sanity that makes this such a good read. A great diversion from the usual disc world storylines.

It is almost needless to say that this is an awesome graphic novel - with Pratchett writing the story line and a more than talented artist bringing those words to life, it is a must-have, and a great way to get people not so into reading into Terry Pratchett as a soft introduction. So if you have a teen who doesn't like to read, this is a great one for teaching them that reading can be a hell of a lot of fun!

Another great book from pratchett! While this one won't last as long as his novels the illustrations are excellent and the story is solid. As always pratchett's writing elicits more than a few laughs and the plot moves along at a good pace. Since finishing this book I have found myself going back to it a few times and enjoying reading bits and pieces while looking at the pictures, not something I have done with other Pratchett novels. A good addition to any pratchett collection, and possibly a nice feature for your coffee table.
