This is the life story of Eratosthenes (AIR-uh-TOS-thuh-neez), the Greek scholar who accurately calculated the circumference of the earth c.3BC. This book portrayed ancient Greek life with an engaging story (Kathryn Lasky) and relevant illustrations(Kevin Hawks). The tale begins with his birth and early education in Cyrene. Followed by his education and accomplishments in Athens then moves to his appointment as tutor to the pharohs son in Alexandria. He was later to be appointed head librarian in Alexandria where is greatest contribution to society was made. Although for ages 9-12 we found it a great read for adults and children alike. A great history lesson without the wriggles or complaints!
