There are few aspects of human existence to which Leunig has not turned his renaissance mind, ranging from the sublime to the seemingly ridiculous. In even the smallest things, he sees the larger key. No matter how serious or confronting the topic, he finds the funny side. The uplifting side. The side you didn't even realise was there.

This is a book of incredible depth and integrity, a very moving collection of short pieces by Leunig which reveals a far more serious, more contemplative Leunig than is often seen in his cartoons. The book features short articles written for Melbourne's Age newspaper from the 1980s through to the present day, each of which reveal his thoughts on a particular issue. Surprisingly political, these pieces are often tinged with lament or even subdued anger at the world, showing Leunig's preference for the simple things to be appreciated in a character or place.
For one used to the often light-hearted spirit of Leunig's cartoons, this book continues his witty and slightly cynical attitude to his subjects, framed within a beautiful literary style. But underlying this there is a deeper, more heartfelt aspect which will leave you thirsting for the kind of world Leunig envisages.
