This is the third book in Tamora Pierce's Beka Cooper trilogy and the most 'adult'one of the series. Beka deals with guilt, love and betrayal in her personal life while hard on the heels of a group of people who have abducted the king's young son in an attempt to overthrow the king's reign. New and fascinating (for me) ways of magic were part of the story as well, and Beka needs to follow her own heart and integrity if she wants to survive and make sense of everything that happens along the way. I do not want to give away the ending and go into more detail here - I think this is a great book and befitting as the last one in this trilogy. It also weaves a bridge to other books by Tamora Pierce, set in Tortall at a different time in the future, that made me want to reread the 'The Lioness' quartet of books.
I love that Tamora Pierce's books have female heroes and role models that are not Barbie - or Bratz - cut outs, but girls on their way to womenhood learning to stand up for themselves and follow their own lead, no matter what everyone else is saying.
