This story is a rare and utterly engaging experience. It tells the extraordinary story of a geisha -summoning up a quarter century from 1929 to the post-war years of Japan's dramatic history, and opening a window into a half-hidden world of eroticism and enchantment, exploitation and degradation. A young peasant girl is sold as servant and apprentice to a renowned geisha house. She tells her story many years later from the Waldorf Astoria in New York. Her memoirs conjure up the perfection and the ugliness of life behind rice-paper screens, where young girls learn the arts of geisha - dancing and singing, how to wind the kimono, how to walk and pour tea, and how to beguile the land's most powerful men.

Reviews

Golden puts to good use his studies of Japanese culture at Harvard and Columbia in this story of Sayuri, sold into slavery at a geisha house in 1929, who finds that she's on her own when World War II starts. The 75,000-copy first printing says a lot about the publisher's commitment to this debut novel.

The life of a famous Kyoto geisha‘from her painful apprenticeship in the early 1930s through the years of her prime and her later career in Manhattan‘is rendered with stunning clarity in this fully imagined first novel. Golden effortlessly spins the tale as the dictated autobiography of quick-witted Chiyo Sakamoto, the daughter of a poor fisherman, who attains the pinnacle of geisha success. In the process, Golden evokes the spectrum of traditional Japanese society. Sold as a child by her financially desperate father, Chiyo is placed in a house for geisha as the personal maid to Hatsumomo, one of Kyoto's most sought-after geisha. There she is trained in the arts of dance, singing and the tea ceremony. Hatsumomo, however, threatened by Chiyo's beauty, treats her with unrestrained cruelty. Chiyo's position is one of indentured servitude: she may not leave until she has repaid all of her living expenses and even her original purchase cost. After many vicissitudes, Chiyo is transformed into a celebrated geisha called Sayuri; many men offer to be her danna (high-paying boyfriend), an honor that‘defying Western expectations‘does not include sex unless the geisha chooses so. Despite legions of admirers however, Chiyo/Sayuri secretly pines for an unattainable man. Golden splendidly renders the superficiality of geisha culture: the word geisha translates to "artist" or "artisan," and the women spend hours painting on porcelain make-up, caring for their beautifully hued silk kimonos and honing clever conversational skills. Counter to everything geisha are taught, Chiyo learns that her own feelings do matter, and honoring them results in a well-earned, intelligent and satisfyingly happy ending. "An epic tale and a beautiful evocation of a rapidly vanishing world" The Times "The sort of novel that novel-lovers yearn for, which is to say, so convincing that while reading it you become transported to another time, another place, and feel you are listening and seeing with someone else's ears and eyes" -- Margaret Forster "Endlessly fascinating...a narrative that is both gripping and beautifully paced...a wonderful read" Observer "Sayuri's memoirs reveal Golden to have great gifts of imaginative empathy...fascinating" Independent "This is one of those rare novels that evokes a vanished world with absolute conviction and in every detail... This book is exceptional" Daily Mail

Amazing book, once I started reading this I couldn't put it down and I am a fussy reader. Arthur Golden truly captures the character of Sayuri and tells the story so beautifully

This is my all time favourite novel. Golden has done a remarkable job of capturing the emotions of a young Geisha. From the first page, I was instantly transported into the mind of young Sayuri. The movie does not do this story any justice. I recommend this novel to all - young and old.

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 02/09/2007

This is a beautifully written story of the life of a Japanese Geisha - a life of servitude and submission hidden behind decadent kimonos, jewellery and full face makeup. The story has much more depth than could ever be conveyed by the movie, taking the reader into the life of Sayuri and seeing the world through her eyes. An asbosule must-read.

This is a wonderfully colourful and descriptive tale. The author had me consumed from beginning to end. This is a lovely chick novel that details the life of a geisha and the Japanese culture. Very romantic with some interesting characters. A highly recommended read. Great for those that enjoy learning about another culture and/or historical stories.

Reading this novel, I laughed, I cried, I cried some more. My heart ached for the doomed relationship between the chairman and geisha. Forbidden love, so romantic and such a lovely interwoven story about a poor girl who overcame all odds and rose to fame as a world-famous geisha.
Highly recommended to anyone who has ever loved, ever.
My favourite book and a must-read.

This is a beautifully written novel. I just finished this novel and loved it! Wonderfully evocative, with a story that just keeps you gripped, this novel is going to be around for a very long time. It was hard to remember it was written by a man, the detailing was superb, the characters seemed so real, and you really cared about what happend to the heroine. I can definately recommend this book.

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 27/02/2006

This is a thoroughly enjoyable read. Arthur Golden did an excellent job of bringing the story to life. Memoirs Of A Geisha follows the life of Sayuri, a young woman's journey through life - becoming one of the the most reknown and beautiful Geisha. I personally found Sayuri to get a wee bit boring at times, my favourite character in the book however would have to be Hatsumomo - she's the type of villain one loves to hate. If you've seen the film, you must read the book as you'll get more insight into Sayuri's story.
