Gregory Rogers captivated children everywhere with The Boy, the Bear, the Baron, the Bard and he's brought back some of that book's characters for his latest wordless picture book Midsummer Knight. This is a beautiful read for children five and over and delighted both my seven- and nine-year-old, as evidenced by the following conversation: 'It would be better if it had some words', said my nine-year-old after sitting engrossed with Midsummer Knight for quite some time. 'Really? Can you tell me what happens in the story?' I asked. Twenty-five minutes later I was regretting my question. Without reopening the book to check the pictures, Jack was animatedly telling me the story, frame by frame. Clearly a picture does tell a thousand words! Rogers has found a most delightful way to engage children in the art and craft of storytelling. The bear from the first book is back, naively blundering from one mishap to the next until he ends up saving the day with the help of the boy (who is now a fairy!). There's magic, mystery and adventure aplenty with a King and Queen locked in a dungeon and an enchanted tree that shrinks anyone who ventures into its hollows.
