'I can imagine you at forty,' she said, a hint of malice in her voice. 'I can picture it right now.' He smiled without opening his eyes. 'Go on then.' 15th July 1988. Emma and Dexter meet for the first time on the night of their graduation. Tomorrow they must go their separate ways. So where will they be on this one day next year? And the year after that? And every year that follows? Twenty years, two people, ONE DAY. From the author of the massive bestseller STARTER FOR TEN.

About the Author

David Nicholls trained as an actor before making the switch to writing. His TV credits include the third series of Cold Feet, Rescue Me, and I Saw You. He was co-writer for the film adaptation of Simpatico, which starred Nick Nolte, Jeff Bridges and Sharon Stone. David's bestselling first novel, STARTER FOR TEN, was selected for the Richard and Judy Book Club in 2004, and David has written the screenplays for film versions of both STARTER FOR TEN (released in 2006, starring James McAvoy) and THE UNDERSTUDY (not yet released). Also, for BBC TV, David wrote a modern version of Much Ado About Nothing and recently adapted Tess of the D'Urbervilles. He is currently working on an adaptation of Far From The Madding Crowd.

Reviews

The funniest, loveliest book I've read in ages. Most of all it is horribly, cringingly, absolutely 100% honest and true to life: I lived every page. -- Jenny Colgan 'I couldn't think of anyone who wouldn't love this book.' -- RADIO FIVE LIVE SIMON MAYO BOOKS PANEL 'Deserves to be the must-read hit of the summer.' -- NEWS OF THE WORLD I found it totally gripping. The characters are complex, the locations familiar. I don't want to give away the ending but everyone who reads it agrees how powerful it is. -- Ed Miliband The New Statesman

The Hollywood-ready latest from Nicholls (The Understudy) makes a brief pit stop in book form before its inevitable film adaptation. (It's already in development.) The episodic story takes place during a single day each year for two decades in the lives of Dex and Em. Dexter, the louche public school boy, and Emma, the brainy Yorkshire lass, meet the day they graduate from university in 1988 and run circles around one another for the next 20 years. Dex becomes a TV presenter whose life of sex, booze, and drugs spins out of control, while Em dully slogs her way through awful jobs before becoming the author of young adult books. They each take other lovers and spouses, but they cannot really live without each other. Nicholls is a glib, clever writer, and while the formulaic feel and maudlin ending aren't ideal for a book, they'll play in the multiplex. (June) Copyright 2010 Reed Business Information.

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 02/02/2012

This book should come with a warning - very addictive and hard to put down! Such a refreshing love story (if you can call it that, as not a traditional one!), and such a great way to look back at the past decades and laugh at how silly everything was... I have heard the film is a real let down, so I will not be watching it! But the book I will most likely read again :)

4 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 20/11/2011

A really enjoyable read. Due to the 'one day a year' format it is easy to pick up and put down and has a relaxed feeling to it, like an old friendship. As usual the movie does not do it justice.

4 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 14/11/2011

I read One Day in under a week and despite "chick lit" not really being my type of book, I found it mesmerising and a delight to read. There were laugh-out-loud moments and moments where I wanted to wring the neck of one of the characters...it's a powerful book when I feel like that. Nicholls doesn't disappoint with the relationship between the two protagonists (and of course, the movie simply doesn't live up to the same expectations as his written work) and it truly makes readers realise how quickly life can pass you by.
I highly recommend One Day - but get the original cover, not the one connected to the film. It makes you forget there is a movie version and you can just emerse yourself in the story.

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 26/06/2011

This book was one of the most enjoyable ones that I've read in a very very long time. I really recommend it for everyone. It explores life and friendship. I think I have ruined the movie for me now because I will already have such high expectations from this book! I will definitely read other books by David Nicholls.
