A wonderful, down to earth (pardon the pun) guide to vegetable and herb growing in Australia. Good step-by-step guides to suit both the beginner and experienced gardener, encouraging anyone to try vegetable gardening. One of my favourite aspects is its encouragement to start small if one wishes, as opposed to the usual recommendation of a large 6 bed rotation system.
Excellent resource. It is simple but not simplistic. Information, ideas and inspiration abound. It is perfect for the beginning sustanance gardener as it has a wealth of ideas for different types of vegetable and herb gardens. As an Australian publication the information on seasonal plantings and regional plantings is useful and relevent.
I have about a "zillion" garden books but this one is right up there in "The Top Ten" It's one of my all time favorites! If you only ever buy one garden book, be sure to have a good look at this one! If only every single person simply dug up "One Magic Square" meter of earth and grew just what they could in that small area, the world would be a better place. Gardening does something to people that nothing else does. All our neighbours have immaculately trimmed shrubs and perfectly straight garden edges but not a single edible thing in sight! They simply don't know what they are missing! Almost everyone can find a square meter of soil and could at least grow a few herbs but they prefer to eat "fresh" produce that could be weeks old and then complain how expensive it is! This book tells how easy it is and gives good clear instructions that anyone can follow so that they can have a little plot up and running in an afternoon.
Excellent publication, simple to read and understand, inspiring for those who think they can't garden. There are plenty of ideas for recycling unwanted household products and waste and makes you see your overall garden in a completely different way.
