In the "Oresteia" - the only trilogy in Greek drama which survives from antiquity - Aeschylus took as his subject the bloody chain of murder and revenge within the royal family of Argos. Moving from darkness to light, from rage to self-governance, from primitive ritual to civilized institution, its spirit of struggle and regeneration is eternal.

robert fagles is one of the leading translators of greek literature today. His work on the iliad and the odyssey has been subject to numerous awards and his standard is no lower here. known for his freeness or non-literalness in translation, aeschylus oresteia is a perfect candidate for him. Aeschylus was known for his unruly sentences and grammatical forms even in athens, and fagles endeavours to recreate them. the result is a gripping translation of one of the most popular plays ever written -- the athenians performed it every year. the story of how athens got its government, it is unbelieveably dramatic.
