In The Origins of Modern Witchcraft author Ann Moura, a practicing Witch and historian, makes a sweeping tour of more than 5,000 years of religious and cultural history. She studies the evolution of concepts such as original sin, and the Tree of Life, the relationship between cermonial magick and Wicca, and much more. Although Ann Moura has a Masters degree in history, this is a less than impressive book. Moura's theory is that a peaceful, technologically advanced civilisation in the ancient Indus Valley was wiped out by warlike Aryan invaders.
As a piece of speculative writing, it is reasonably interesting, but the sheer number of unsupported claims made here is disappointing. The lack of footnotes is surprising from a member of the scholastic community. Even more alarming is her hostile tone when discussing anything 'descended from the Aryans,' including but not limited to, the Roman Empire, the Pope, and Christianity in general.
In summary, if you are interested in speculative 'histories' of pagan Witchcraft, you may find this theory intriguing, but the lack of supporting facts makes it more a myth than a real history.
