Pre-Order Malcolm Gladwell's New Book, David and Goliath, Coming 3 October 2013. From the bestselling author of Blink and The Tipping Point, Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers: The Story of Success overturns conventional wisdom about genius to show us what makes an ordinary person an extreme overachiever. Why do some people achieve so much more than others? Can they lie so far out of the ordinary? In this provocative and inspiring book, Malcolm Gladwell looks at everyone from rock stars to professional athletes, software billionaires to scientific geniuses, to show that the story of success is far more surprising, and far more fascinating, than we could ever have imagined. He reveals that it's as much about where we're from and what we do, as who we are - and that no one, not even a genius, ever makes it alone. Outliers will change the way you think about your own life story, and about what makes us all unique. "Gladwell is not only a brilliant storyteller; he can see what those stories tell us, the lessons they contain". (Guardian). "Malcolm Gladwell is a global phenomenon ...he has a genius for making everything he writes seem like an impossible adventure". (Observer). "He is the best kind of writer - the kind who makes you feel like you're a genius, rather than he's a genius". (The Times). Author, journalist, cultural commentator and intellectual adventurer, Malcolm Gladwell is a staff writer for the New Yorker magazine. His first book The Tipping Point captured the world's attention with its theory that a curiously small change can have unforeseen effects. His other international bestselling books are Outliers, which looks at the stories of exceptional individuals and reveals the secrets of their success, Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking and What The Dog Saw, a collection of his most provocative and entertaining New Yorker pieces.

About the Author

Author, journalist, cultural commentator and intellectual adventurer, Malcolm Gladwell was born in 1963 in England to a Jamaican mother and an English mathematician father. He grew up in Canada and graduated with a degree in history from the University of Toronto in 1984. From 1987 to 1996, he was a reporter for the Washington Post, first as a science writer and then as New York City bureau chief. Since 1996, he has been a staff writer for the New Yorker magazine. His curiosity and breadth of interests are shown in New Yorker articles ranging over a wide array of subjects including early childhood development and the flu, not to mention hair dye, shopping and what it takes to be cool. His first book The Tipping Point captured the world's attention with its theory that a curiously small change can have unforeseen effects, and the phrase has become part of our language, used by writers, politicians and business people everywhere to describe cultural trends and strange phenomena. 'His other international bestselling books are Blink, which explores how a snap judgement can be far more effective than a cautious decision, and What The Dog Saw, a collection of his most provocative and entertaining New Yorker pieces.

Reviews

Journalist Gladwell has established himself on the nonfiction bestseller lists by breaking down complex social science research into approachable concepts that can spark discussion around water coolers and cafe tables. Some of Gladwell's critics fault him for zeroing in on compelling anecdotes that may not consistently add up to empirical proof, but his flair for narrative serves him well as a reader. Gladwell builds dramatic tension into his storytelling-from the unique childhood of software tycoon Bill Gates to the secrets of success found along the rice fields of ancient China and Japan-making for an engaging listening experience even though the threads may not always tie together into a seamless package. The bonus author interview features some entertaining insights, including Canadian Gladwell's explanation for why so many comedy superstars hail from America's northern neighbor. A Little, Brown hardcover (Reviews, Sept. 22). (Nov.) Copyright 2009 Reed Business Information.

4 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 30/11/2010

A very insightful book. Well written and easy to read, I really like it. The author explains very well his theory on how greatly successful people become so successful - is it chance or pure luck or just being in the right place at the right time. He backs up his theories with lots of evidence. A very intelligent writer!

I found "Outliers" on the "Best-Sellers" shelf in the busy budget terminal of Changi Airport in Singapore. I had never heard of it before but after flicking through a few pages, it had an idea which interested me - success.

This book gave me optimism which I still have now - 1 year after I finished reading the book. It reminds me of how someone like me, living in a small town in New Zealand can too have success in any field if I am willing to put the hours in. Despite the many statements Caldwell puts together without proving they came from any reputable source and the many obvious conclusions he makes, I quite enjoyed reading about the theories of others which without doubt were quite convincing.

I would definitely recommend reading "Outliers" for many reasons - changing your mentality about life, reading short biographies on famous and rich people and lastly to help develop your own ideas on the theories produced by Caldwell.

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 31/05/2010

loved it - one of those books that you don't want to put down and can't wait to pick up - just to see where Gladwell's mind goes in painting the picture of how success really comes to be. It makes you wonder how random success really is and why some people who don't seem that bright get to be very successful. This book sheds light on a lot of mysterious human happenings. Love his easy writing style and his attention to detail.

1 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 07/03/2010

By reading this book some will get very disappointed about his/her situation and even feel no hard work will make them rewarded. However, as real people examples show if you put at least 10,000 hours of practice on one field you will be the expert and may start making money. So don't give up, don't complain, just do what you want to do again and again!!

Another Gladwell classic. He just keeps on debunking and explaining human phenomena in a way that's interesting and accessible.
