Gr 5-8-Though Keladry has the courage and determination necessary to be a page, she's the only female among the teens and tweens training to become knights in this novel (Random, 2000) by Tamora Pierce. Mixing magic and medieval settings, the author continues the series begun with First Test (Random, 1999). Her year is off to a busy start when she unexpectedly adds a stray dog and a timorous maid to her list of responsibilities. Both prove loyal and caring as do her friends. The young noblewoman is not afraid to challenge her taunters when they harass her or haze first year students. After a brawl gets them all in trouble, practice with swords, axes, and spears keep them all too tired to rekindle the fight. Over the next three years, serving at the midwinter feast teaches courtly manners and summer treks develop tactical skills. When Keladry and several friends are attacked, she shows her leadership gifts and saves the group from almost certain death or capture. Keladry grows into a young woman now drawn romantically to old friend Neal. On the day of the final page test, Keladry's maid and dog are kidnapped and choosing to rescue them displays her inner strength. Bernadette Dunne narrates with smooth assurance, giving even minor characters distinctive voices. While there's enough adventure here for guys, Keladry's concerns about getting her period and developing a feminine physique make Page appealing to girls facing the same issues.-Barbara Wysocki, Cora J. Lord Wyldon suprised everyone, including himself, when he allows Keladry to pass as a page. Kel is more determined than ever and soon faces difficulties including those faced with growing up amongst boys and continuing her crackdown on hazing by her enemy Joren of Stone Mountain and his friends.
Kel has many friends and soon makes another in the timid form of her new maid Lalasa. Beaten and hareassed by other servants and noblemen alike, Lalasa is shy and easily startled. Under Kel's wing she starts to look at life in a better way.
Kel's adventures continue when she and a group of fellow pages stumble on a bandit's camp and Kel takes charge. Lalasa and a many dog called Jump are kidnapped and Kel faces a hard choice. Examinations or her maid and friend. If she chooses her friend she risks redoing all four years as a page.
In a gripping and exhilarating novel, you follow Kel as she grows and learns and takes a firmer hold on her destiny.
Yay, Jump! I love that dog. And Owen, and Lalasa! Yes, the new chracters (animal and human) in this really made the book for me. It was worth a million hp hip hoorays. And a million reads! Kel's new challenges and troubles and adventures make up a book that is definately worth reading.
Kel is finally a page! She has passed her first test but is determined to carry on proving that she is at least as good as the boys. She has many battles to fight. Battles with her new dog, Jump; her new maid, Lalasa; her horse, Peachblossom; Joren and his pack of bullies; her training-master, Lord Wilden; alot of battles with her fear of heights; and especially battles for her new feelings about her best friend Neal. But somebody else is planning battles against her, to.....
The second book in what is proving to be another fantastic series by Tamora Pierce. I would recommend reading the first book, 'First Test' if you haven't already. However, new readers who start with the second book shouldn't find themselves too lost.
Here, Kel has survived her probationary year and is finally a page, but that's only the beginning!
Kel not only has to stand up to some of her fellow classmates to prove her worth, but her fear of heights is another thing to overcome on top of rigorous training and a few hairy moments as she works her way through in the hopes of graduating to a squire.
Kel is now a page, having proved her worth to all. Now though she must struggle through her last three years as a page and show all she can become a squire. Only problem is, now the Training Master knows her weakness. She's afraid of heights. But instead of turning her away, Kel is surprised by the fact that her Training Master is trying to help her over come it. Can Kel over come this fear in time, and what plots is Jordan up to now that he has become a Squire.
Find out all in the second Protector of the Small book.
PAGE is the second installment in Tamora Pierce's PROTECTOR OF THE SMALL quartet and it improves on the already fantastic opening novel FIRST TEST. This particular series is again set in the enchanted kingdom of Tortall and features Keladry of Mindelan, now eleven years old and still as determined as ever to become a knight. In FIRST TEST, Kel successfully undergoes a probationary year which had been unfairly imposed upon her by the conservative training master Lord Wyldon, who doesn't believe that women are cut out to be knights. However, Kel truimphs over every test put in her path and Lord Wyldon has no choice but to add her officially to the ranks of pagehood.
in the second book of protector of the small we see kel become a page and a knight in training, after surviving her first year in the castle can she make it as the training steps up a notch or will she fail and bring her friends down with her? and is their any room in her life for love? will there ever be?
Kel finally makes it through her probationary year and is now a page. Already we are seeing that Kel is something special, she has a strong sense of what is right and protects the downtrodden. Pierce draws us right into Kel's world and we are all cheering for her!
