Ken Follett had long been a staple of the bestseller lists for his novels of intrigue and espionage. Then came "The Pillars of the Earth," a grand novel of epic storytelling that readers and critics quickly hailed as his crowning achievement. Now, "The Pillars of the Earth" is available for the first time to a new audience of readers, in this attractive new trade paperback edition.
In 12th-century England, the building of a mighty Gothic cathedral signals the dawn of a new age. This majestic creation will bond clergy and kings, knights and peasants together in a story of toil, faith, ambition and rivalry. A sweeping tale of the turbulent middle ages, "The Pillars of the Earth" is a masterpiece from one of the world's most popular authors.
"A novel of majesty and power...Will hold you, fascinate you, surround you." -- "Chicago Sun-Times"
"A towering tale...There's murder, arson, treachery, torture, love, and lust...A good time can be had by all." -- "New York Daily News"
"Touches all human emotions...truly a novel to get lost in." -- "Cosmopolitan"

Reviews

With this book, Follett risks all and comes out a clear winner, escaping the narrow genre of suspense thrillers to take credit for a historical novel of gripping readability, authentic atmosphere and detail and memorable characterization. Set in 12th-century England, the narrative concerns the building of a cathedral in the fictional town of Kingsbridge. The ambitions of three men merge, conflict and collide through four decades during which social and political upheaval and the internal politics of the church affect the progress of the cathedral and the fortunes of the protagonists. The insightful portrayals of an idealistic master builder, a pious, dogmatic but compassionate prior and an unscrupulous, ruthless bishop are balanced by those of a trio of independent, resourceful women (one of them quite loathesome) who can stand on their own as memorable characters in any genre. Beginning with a mystery that casts its shadow on ensuing events, the narrative is a seesaw of tension in which circumstances change with shocking but true-to-life unpredictability. Follett's impeccable pacing builds suspense in a balanced narrative that offers action, intrigue, violence and passion as well as the step-by-step description of an edifice rising in slow stages, its progress tied to the vicissitudes of fortune and the permutations of evolving architectural style. Follett's depiction of the precarious balance of power between monarchy and religion in the Middle Ages, and of the effects of social upheavals and the forces of nature (storms, famines) on political events; his ability to convey the fine points of architecture so that the cathedral becomes clearly visualized in the reader's mind; and above all, his portrayals of the enduring human emotions of ambition, greed, bravery, dedication, revenge and love, result in a highly engrossing narrative. Manipulating a complex plot in which the characters interact against a broad canvas of medieval life, Follett has written a novel that entertains, instructs and satisfies on a grand scale. 400,000 first printing; $400,000 ad/promo; Literary Guild main dual selection; author tour. (Sept.)

A radical departure from Follett's novels of international suspense and intrigue, this chronicles the vicissitudes of a prior, his master builder, and their community as they struggle to build a cathedral and protect themselves during the tumultuous 12th century, when the empress Maud and Stephen are fighting for the crown of England after the death of Henry I. The plot is less tightly controlled than those in Follett's contemporary works, and despite the wealth of historical detail, especially concerning architecture and construction, much of the language as well as the psychology of the characters and their relationships remains firmly rooted in the 20th century. This will appeal more to lovers of exciting adventure stories than true devotees of historical fiction. Literary Guild dual main selection.-- Cynthia Johnson Whealler, Cary Memorial Lib., Lexington, Mass.

"Enormous and brilliant ...a great epic tale...crammed with characters unbelievably alive across the great gulf of centuries...touches all human emotion--love and hate, loyalty and treachery, hope and despair. See for yourself. This is truly a novel to get lost in."--Cosmopolitan

"Wonderful...will hold you, fascinate you, surround you."--Chicago Sun-Times

"An extraordinary epic buttressed by suspense...a monumental masterpiece...A towering triumph from a major talent."--Booklist

"A seesaw of tension....A novel that entertains, instructs, and satisfies on a grand scale" --Publishers Weekly

4 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 06/04/2006

Ken Follett is usually noted for his espionage thrillers, of which "Eye of the Needle" is the most well-known.

This novel, however, represents a departure from Follett's norm, focussing rather on the construction of a cathedral in 12th century England.

There is a huge cast of characters, a warren of plotlines, sporadic bursts of violence, (some gratuitous sex) and extensive detail paid to historical accuracy and background. The novel spans forty years od political intrigue and social upheaval. Prior Phillip is a Man of God worthy of respect, and William of Hamliegh one of the most repugnant baddies I've ever come across (I hated him; right down there with Tim Roth's character in "Rob Roy")

A vast, sweeping novel that is justly part of Whitcoull's top 100...

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 26/01/2008

This is one of my favourite books and I note with interest that there is now a sequel.

A huge, sweeping saga that details the amazing feat of building a monument to God in a time devoid of all the modern-day conveniences available. You shake your head at the enormity of the task, and marvel that so many of these churches remain standing today.

Follett captures this sense of wonder and creates a strong cast of characters to mirror the strength and timelessness of the building they are tied to.

4 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 01/10/2009

This must be a very powerful book, because whenever my wife reads it I notice that she is crying. Im just glad that its not my fault.
I took off one star because the author had the bad taste to use a full page photo of himself in a turtle-neck skivvy for the back page.

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 16/02/2009

Magnificant story telling, lots of suspence in a tale that reflects the eternal fight between good and evil and ends up with utter beauty.

Easy language used to describe complex situations and storyline is very well connected despite many events that happen at any one time.

The speed of events in most of the story is relatively slow; however in the final chapters things start rolling faster with less suspence.

I would strongly recommend it to all and I am currently reading its sequel "World Without End."

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 19/01/2009

This was the first Ken Follet book I had read and I just loved it. My second hand hard cover version has a life-time place in my book case as it is a book I will read again. The descriptive detail regarding the building of the cathedral and the lives of the characters was fascinating. Even though it was a large read I still wanted more when I got to the end so I am really pleased to find out from other reviews here that there is a sequel. I shall definitely be tracking that down.

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 05/01/2009

This my absolute favourite book - I've read it twice and know I will read it again. It is an absorbing storyof medieval Britain and the uncertainty that surrounds everyone's life from the ruler down to the lowest serf. Makes life in NZ seem luxurious in its freedom and individual rights.

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 04/01/2009

This is one of my favourite books and a great gift for any avid reader. A departure from Ken Follett's normal thriller style of book, Pillars of the Earth is a sweeping saga that will have you whipping through the pages. It's a thick book, close to 1000 pages but it left me still wishing for more (thankfully there's now a sequel).

have not fineshed the book yet but so far the author has kept up my interest. Reading when I go to bed thinking I'll just read a couple of pages but i find it's more like a couple of chapters. I like Ken Folletts style of writing and humour.
