I learnt some time ago that a good way into sprawling and dense writers is through their interviews. Their ideas can be tapped much more easily because they aren't interrogated with the kind of complexity that an essay or book would, both because the interview format doesn't allow it, and that the way speech operates can be very different to prepared, written writing. On the other hand, seasoned readers will get just the same level of satisfaction out of interviews on a different level. It provides a far more personable window than writing affords, will clue into which ideas, which criticisms, stuck out to a thinker, and will give a sly wink at times with subtle gestures that anyone without a particular familiarity will miss or ignore. The reason this book over other collections of interviews is so damned good is that it follows with a selection of writing on the same or smilier topics as are treated in the interviews. These French know how to talk as well as they write.
