The latest version of the proverbial "Penguin Guide" continues three decades of reviews. This 1500+ page tome has for the longest time been indispensable to diehard classical music collectors, with thumbnail reviews pointing up what's good and bad in the current catalog, and updated annually. Even with its bag of cliches ("rhythms are lightly sprung") and unmistakable bias against the American labels, this is still a good reference to keep on hand.
