– Customer review on 11/11/2006 Edward Said is one of the first people to challenge existing power structures in the modern world. The main idea in this is that the West construct of the Eastern "other" is that of the passive, feminine other. An entity to be manipulated and controlled at the West's whims. It is an explanation of colonization and of how it came to be that the West. The "Orient" is the negative flip side of the "Occident".
This is a controversial book but became the founding text for postcolonial studies.
A required reading for anyone who is in the political/social science/cultural studies field.
