I read this because all the books on current philosophical, scientific and technological trends I was reading while at university kept making reference to this ground breaking work. And it's actually very readable and interesting (certainly not something you can say about all, or even many, French thinkers), and provides a good basis for a critique of postmodernism. A good starting point for further study.
