Yes, that's right this is a book about punctuation, or lack of it, in the world today. At first take that sounds like about the most boring topic to write or read a book about.
But this book was a number 1 bestseller in England and has made the bestsellers list in the US also. So, I opened it up to read a few pages to see what the fuss was about and couldn't put it down.
Punctuation in today's world of email, text messaging and marketing gurus is a dying art. The back cover blurb and title of the book explain how disasters can arise from leaving out some small black marks in writing. I found more interestingly that punctuation is the key to leaving a reader in suspense, telling the punch line of a joke and setting the tone of your writing.
'Stickler's unite!' is the phrase that I'll remember when I think of this book. When you see bad punctuation in the world today, do something about it - together we can make a difference.
The chapters go through each of our important punctuation marks and give grammar lessons as well as explaining their history.
Lyne's writing is stylish, elegant, witty and an absolute joy to read.
Eats, Shoots & Leaves is very witty in getting the author's point across. Whether you are trying to brush up your punctuation skills or you are one of the legion of punctuation nit-pickers around the world this book will provide both easy explanations about punctuation in general and some amusing examples of how the English language is continuously abused. You will not be disappointed adding this to your bookshelf.
Even if you're not a stickler for correct punctuation and grammar, this is a wonderfully light-hearted and witty book for anyone who loves language, loves to read or even just loves to laugh. I tried to read this on my daily commute but had to stop because the other train passengers were giving me odd looks!
This is a great grammar book for those who wouldn't even say the word! It's witty, informative and a joy to read. The style of the book is relaxed and humourous. It's easy to read and fun too. You don't often think of curling up with a grammar book, but that's exactly what I did here and found myself laughing out loud. A joy to read.
