Religious Vegetarianism is an amazingly concise but still very detailed exploration of vegetariain ideals in the context of the world's major religions. As the authors attest, vegetarianism in a religious context goes back millennia-a point that should contradict the common belief that vegetarian ideals are little more than a recent 'fad'. Passing from the Orphic and Eleusinian mysteries of ancient Greece-a topic that was extremely fascinating-to Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Judaism, and Christianity, Religious Vegetarianism covers a great deal of ground (even if it mentions not enough about Taoist vegetarianism).
The book consists mainly of excerpts from religious writings, some primary religious texts, others more recent writings by religious thinkers.
An excellent addition to anyone interested in the history of vegetarianism and its sacred dimensions
