Coming from a society where women were barred from serious writing and teaching, Julian, an anchorite of the great medieval city of Norwich, nevertheless uses her womanliness and the English vernacular of the day to describe a series of revelations which she received from God in the year 1373. She identifies the female nature of Christ's suffering and the motherhood of God, using images from domestic daily life, emphasizing the homeliness of God's love. She writes in a lively and unpretentious manner and her theology is precise without ever being pedantic.
About the Author
Julian of Norwich (c. 1342 after 1416) was the first woman writer in English. Nothing is known of her background or even her real name, simply that she believed she was a messenger to all Christians because of her 'showings' from God. A.C. Spearing and Elizabeth Spearing have published numerous books and articles on medieval literature.

If you haven't read Julian of Norwich's Revelations before, you are in for a treat. She writes about a loving God, a Christ who is mother to us. Her God is compassionate and merciful. She explains her visions to us and reveals that God desires us to be one with Him. Take this book slowly, a little each day, and you will find it feeding your soul. Julian has much to say that is relevant to our day and age.
The introduction to this edition is very useful - it helps a great deal in placing Julian within the context of her day. Both the Short Text and the Long Text are included, as is an extract from Margery Kempe relating her meeting with Julian and two samples of the original middle English. I'm not in a position to compare the translation with the earlier Penguin Classic of Clifton Wolters as yet, but so far it is quite readable.
