This handy guide provides key phrases for use in everyday circumstances, complete with phonetic spelling; an English-Italian and Italian-English dictionary; the latest information on European currency and rail transportation, and even a tear-out cheat sheet for continued language practice as you wait in line at the Sistine Chapel. Informative, concise, and practical, Rick Steves' Italian Phrase Book and Dictionary is an essential item for any traveler's zainetto.
Absolutely indespensible if you're heading to Italy and don't know the language back to front. Mine is well thumbed and well used after a recent visit there. Rick has a good sense of humour too so there is the odd phrase that you're unlikely to use, but it sure makes you giggle as you flip through! It is a small book so the dictionary in the back is basic but I only found myself at a loss a few times in which case you just shrug and lift your hands in the air - the Italian you're speaking to will understand! Italians really appreciate you trying to speak the language, so get the book before you travel and start brushing up on a few essential words and phrases.
