About the Author

Keith Harrison worked as a marine biologist for Dorset County Council, Nottingham University and The Natural History Museum, London. It was while working at The Natural History Museum that he became interested in William Elford Leach, who had worked at the museum's forebear, the Natural History Department of the British Museum.Eric Smith (1909-1990) lectured in zoology at Manchester, Sheffield and Cambridge universities. He was Professor of Zoology at Queen Mary College, London University 1950-65 and Director of the Plymouth Marine Laboratory 1965-74. He was Vice-President of the Linnean Society of London 1954-5; Vice-President of the Zoological Society of London 1959-91; Vice-Principal of Queen Mary College 1963-5; a member of the UK's Science Research Council 1965-7; Chairman of Trustees of the British Museum (Natural History) 1969-74; President of the International Council of Scientific Unions 1972; and a member of the UK's Advisory Board for the Research Councils 1974-7. He was elected FRS in 1958 and awarded a CBE in 1972. He was knighted in 1977. Sir Eric died in 1990. He and Keith Harrison had collaborated since 1985.
