Of all the books I’ve read to our children, Rowena and the Magic Hawk is by far the best.
Prior to reading about the adventures of the 14 year old heroine Rowena, The Hobbit had been our favourite.
It’s a unique story with a beautiful rhythm and flow and with an ending that both delighted and left us wanting to read the second book immediately.
An insight into how New Zealand must once of looked and I was left with a real sense of what we’ve lost.
There’s a message for young and old that is subtly woven throughout the story and driven in an exciting and action packed manner that had us completely hooked. Once we began reading, we didn’t want to stop and we spent a memorable seven hours reading the entire book in one go.
I’ve never even been tempted to read aloud for that long or thought myself capable of doing so. It’s was because my 10 year old son kept jumping up in excitement and hugging my neck while I read, that prevented us from stopping and possibly risk breaking the book’s spell.
Truly a magic book.

Wow!! What a sensational story I was spellbound by this exhilarating book; it was very difficult to put down. I felt part of Rowena’s journey and the way she dealt with her predicaments. The author magically weaves the reader into the story and give the reader surety no matter their age they to will be refreshed by Rowena’s adventures. I will be eagerly waiting for the second book as I know it will be just as gripping as the first.

I got 2 of these sent out from the states arriving a couple of weeks ago and am about to order 3 more from this site as want each branch of my family to have a copy. My husband seldom reads a whole book and in 45yrs I have not known him to finish one but he read this one through in 2 days!!!!! I, the reader in in the family took 4 days but I do work. I can only agree with the first reviewer I also loved the pictures at the beginning of each chapter.
I am already recommending this book to people of all ages. Found it that there is an ancient Moari legend about a magic Hawk.
In the New Year I plan on reading it aloud to my elderly blind father and others in his rest-home. We are really looking forward to the next installment.
Although the NZ theme attacted me to this book, I believe it is suitable for readers all over the world and age groups from about 10 up.
