Omar Khayyam is among the great Classics of Persian poetry. Rubayi (four line poem) is a very enchanting genre of poetry, and Khayyam's themes of love and ecstasy make it too overwhelming and uplifting, spiritually. But at other times, he sounds too nihilistic and one would wonder, why does he exhibit such an intense impulse of escapism?
If with wine you are drunk be happy,
If seated with a moon-faced (beautiful), be happy,
Since the end purpose of the universe is nothing-ness;
Hence picture your nothing-ness, then while you are, be happy!
