"The God Delusion" caused a sensation when it was published in 2006. Within weeks it became the most hotly debated topic, with Dawkins himself branded as either saint or sinner for presenting his hard-hitting, impassioned rebuttal of religion of all types. His argument could hardly be more topical. While Europe is becoming increasingly secularized, the rise of religious fundamentalism, whether in the Middle East or Middle America, is dramatically and dangerously dividing opinion around the world. In America, and elsewhere, a vigorous dispute between 'intelligent design' and Darwinism is seriously undermining and restricting the teaching of science. In many countries religious dogma from medieval times still serves to abuse basic human rights such as women's and gay rights. And all from a belief in a God whose existence lacks evidence of any kind. Dawkins attacks God in all his forms. He eviscerates the major arguments for religion and demonstrates the supreme improbability of a supreme being. He shows how religion fuels war, foments bigotry and abuses children. "The God Delusion" is a brilliantly argued, fascinating polemic that will be required reading for anyone interested in this most emotional and important subject.

The material in this book is very challanging, and this is exacly what we need right now. After centuries of myths and fables, we now have some scientific material enabling everyday people to make up their minds regarding the blind belief in a god. This book is not about religion or atheism, but the power to decide for one's self. The title itself explains the situation in the world today - delusions. Readers will find this material easy to digest and liberating them from years of false beliefs and dogmas, that may have stifled living their everyday lives. Dawkins must be congratulated for compiling all this scientific material based on evidence.
An excellent book by one of the greatest scientists of our time. Offers believers an insight to what the "other team" has to say in a professional and non-offensive manner.
If you've read a bad review of this book somewhere, the chances are quite good that the reviewer has not actually read it. Dawkins is thoughtful and erudite as always, and his phrasing is carefully considered. One thing is clear when reading all Dawkin's works - the one thing he tries very hard to avoid is allowing a logically mistaken statement to appear in anything he writes.
Dawkins does well moving beyond his natural territory of science to some quite fresh thoughts on e.g. the origins of moral values and behavior and his passion over the pressure religious parents place on children is moving and convincing. Worth reading alongside Christopher Hitchens' God is Not Great. I note that some of the attempted criticism of the Dawkins book on this site is from people who haven't read the book, especially the clown who tries to bring Einstein to the fold, obviously not having read the lengthy discussion of Einstein's views which prompted some Christians to tell him to go back to Germany - nice. But of course those with closed minds will never read this book, or Hitchens' or anything else that would challenge their comfortable fantasies.
Av really great book. Explodes many of the arguments put forward by the Creationists (including so-called 'Intelligent Design' advocates) in an easily read and very comprehensible form. Very well written. Extremely good.
One of the best books I have read. It would be a great world indeed if everyone read this, regardless of personal conviction. Dawkins is a thoughtful humane writer who is free of opinion and deals only with the facts available to him (and human kind). Raise your ability to think rationally and consider reading this great book. In the year 2009 there is no excuse for ignorance. This book is full of amazing thought, idea and fact. Raise your awareness of OUR home, Earth & the Universe.
I've read a plethora of books attempting to convert me to a certain religion and have never been satisfied with an answer. Dawkins is attempting to convert me to Atheism in this book of his, and over time I believe he will be successful. There are many valid points he brings up - most I agree with, while few are a stretch. What I most enjoyed about this book was that upon picking it up I felt that I'd be berated from cover to cover about how Atheism is the 'correct' choice over any religious viewpoint. This was not the case at all so I was pleasantly surprised. The last half of the book focused more on what we can learn from religion, be that good or bad. I feel that I would have felt quite indifferent about this book had the last chapters been omitted
By writing this book, Dawkins has brought atheism out in the open. It is a book of which its impact goes far beyond its pages. It has encouraged those who were not particularly religious but perhaps considered themselves cultural christians (or other religions), to realise that it is ok to not believe in a god or gods.
I have to agree with the previous reviewers comments, this book is quite superb at explaining the inadequacies of logic concerning intelligent design, the bible, the koran and any other religous text. What i like about this book is that although it explains evolutionary theory or fact, it doesn't head into the extreme of saying all forms of religion should be lost. He makes a strong case for treasuring the bible and the koran for what they are, great fantastical stories. Well worth a read.
