Secrets of the Red Lantern is a bittersweet family saga in which treasured recipes form the threads that bind members together for life. It is both a moving memoir and a dazzling collection of sumptuous Vietnamese recipes, complete with beautiful food, location and personal photography. Pauline Nguyen tells the honest, difficult story of her family, following the journey of her parents from their homeland in Vietnam on their escape to Thailand as refugees, and then on to their eventual resettlement in Australia. They moved to Sydney's most vibrant and notorious Vietnamese enclave where Pauline and her brother Luke grew up. Pauline, Luke and Pauline's husband Mark Jensen now run Red Lantern, an acclaimed, modern Vietnamese restaurant in Sydney's popular inner-city area of Surry Hills. At the heart of this story is a love of food. It helped to placate homesickness, became central to the family's early success in Australia and was sometimes the only language the family could use to communicate with each other. In the end, it was this shared passion for food that reconciled the family and help create Red Lantern's success.

One of my favourite Vietnamese cookbooks! The recipe is very authentic southern Vietnamese cooking. The book is also the story of a Viet family here in Australia. It documented their struggles with the new life and new environment. The story continues on how the new generation Viet Aussies grow up and still keep their traditional values while adapting to a Western society.

Secrets of the red lantern is a combination of a biography of the Nguyen Family as well as the recipes from the award winning Sydney Restaurant Red Lantern. The book features traditional vietnamese recipes and is definitely as hit for any passionate cook!

I love this cook book. There is something about cooking but having a story behind it. This creates a real memory, a history. We lived in Vietnam as expats for 2 years about 30 kms outside of HCMC and this book brings all the smells and tastes back. I am a big fan of Luke (have his other books) so it was great to get Paulines insite to their familys way of life. The quality of the book makes this a family treasure.

Very moving story with great recipes as a bonus.
Fantastic photography...a must for every bookshelf...you don't need to be an avid recipe collector to enjoy this.
