A charming, short collection of stories, told to suit ages 8 to 10.
The style is very chatty, as if to echo the oral tradition of
telling folk tales. Its lively tone will appeal, particularly the
cheekier comments, like ‘. . . she could curse your carrots to
taste like cat-pee’. Eastwood has an eye for a good image too:
‘[Curses] just bounced off him like a rubber ball off a turtle.’
The chosen stories were unfamiliar to me, which added to the
pleasure of the collection, as did the close identification of the
area from which the tale originated.
To further enhance the book, there are a series of energetic
pictures, in both colour and black and white. These are very
effective at breaking up the writing, and they draw the eye. They
also help when reading the stories to younger children, providing
their imagination with images to support the tales.
