Full of surprises, this second fast-paced and gripping Lily Bard adventure (after Shakespeare's Landlord, 1996) showcases the amateur sleuth's strength, determination and martial arts prowess. Two unsolved murders in two months have already shaken the tiny town of Shakespeare, Ark., when a third person is killed. Lily, who makes ends meet by cleaning houses, finds the body of Del Packard with a 290-pound barbell across his throat at the gym where she works out every day. Lily reasons that all three killings must be connected and are probably racially motivated. Darnell Glass, 18 years old and black, was involved in a fight with a group of white high-school boys; four weeks later, he was found beaten to death. Three weeks after that, Len Elgin, a white farmer, was shot and killed; many think his death was in retaliation for Darnell's murder. The search for a link to Del leads Lily to Howell Winthrop Jr., the owner of Winthrop Sporting Goods, where Del worked. She discovers that a white-supremacist group has secretly been organized among Winthrop's employees, and that Del got in the way. Harris, author of the Aurora Teagarden mysteries, plots an engaging puzzler that's propelled smoothly along by Lily's easy, no-frills narration. (Dec.)

Very addictive series, can't wait to read the rest of the series.
The main character, Lily, is not your typical heroine. She is likeable, motivated and intelligent even in the toughest and tightest of situations.
I was sligthly disapointed, however, to see noticable changes in character personalities. As a reader I felt I had to re-learn these characters instead of moving forward with them.

I have to disagree with the previous review. I found this better than the first Lily Bard story and hard to put down. Lots of action, interesting characters. I am definitely left wanting more of this series.

Though not as enjoyable as the first Lily Bard novel, Charlaine Harris doesn't dissapoint. Lily Bard is a strong female character, her frequent gym workouts and her use of her fitness, strength, and agility when her life depends on it are more realistic than not. In the fist Bard book, the small town of Shakespeare is awakened to a frenzy when someone is murdered. Now in the second book racial problems have exploded after the murder of an African American teenager. Lily becomes involved when she finds one of the people murdered dead in the gym she works out at. It ends in an all out collison when a white supremacists group tries to protect their society of hatred and murder by killing those they deem necessary. While i enjoyed this book, i'm still feeling somewhat underwhelmed by Lily Bard, hopefully the next installment will bring more character to her.
