Sociology of Education: Possibilities and Practices inspires an interest in the sociology of education. It continues to break new ground in presenting a problem-based format to examine conventional and new developments in this area and provides a thoughtful and challenging examination of the societal, cultural and historical context of education. Notable features of the book are that each chapter examines a scenario to explore pertinent sociological perspectives and related approaches to practice, and these are discussed in the Australian and global context. The book is written in language appropriate to those new to studying the sociology of education as well as those with a continued interest in new developments, and provides a format that encourages ongoing discovery through research. The contributing authors represent a great deal of national and international experience and expertise in educational research and share a desire for a reflective and active approach to the study of the sociology of education. The team emphasises the 'living link' of educational theory and practice and the need to excite the reader through the possibilities of the sociological perspective.

I didn't like this book much, it was my textbook for a sociology course and I read almost all of it. Many of my reasons for not liking it were quite picky. For exmaple I found the the text was very big and the layout not very nice. Worst of all, there were many errors, such as typos, repeated sentences, etc. I know such mistakes are minor but they really bugged me and I felt like it hadn't been proof read.
In terms of content, the book provided a fairly good introduction to the sociology of education. It went into good depth on some topics, some of the articles were really interesting, particularly the one about early teachers in Australia. The way the book was relevant to Australia was also good, as I never like using foreign textbooks as they are usually not quite relevant.
I have to say I wouldn't recommend this book overall, it could be useful in some ways but as a main text it was a bit lacking. Hopefully the next edition is proof read and set out better.
