Bruce Dawe is a poet who eschews obscurity in poetry in order to communicate. His poems touch upon many of the themes that characterize the lives or ordinary people, universals that we can all identify with. Having said that, the almost conversational style of many of his poems hides the real skill that goes into their creation. Whenever I bring up Dawe's name in the company of younger, more academic(and hence, very difficult to read) poets, there is an uncomfortable silence. Les Murray gets the same treatment. This collected volume shows a great Australian poet at the height of his powers.
