This title shows how to tie 75 bends, hitches, knots, bindings, loops, mats, plaits, rings and slings in 500 practical colour photographs. It covers 75 different knots, hitches, bends, loops and plaits, together with advice of how each one can be used. Each stage of knot tying is shown in clear photographs accompanied with easy-to-follow explanatory text. It also includes valuable advice and information on materials, types of rope, breaking strengths, terms and techniques. Each project is accompanied by a key icon to show whether the knot is used in fishing, boating, caving, climbing or outdoor pursuits or is a general purpose knot. This book offers instruction and explanation of 75 of the most commonly used and useful knots. All the key types, such as bends, hitches, knots, bindings, loops, mats, plaits, rings and slings are included, each is identified by category and all come with a brief introduction to its origin, use and effectiveness. The introduction discusses the different cords and ropes available, with valuable information on the breaking strengths of each, and information on the broad range of natural and synthetic materials that can be used. Helpful advice is also given on cutting and sealing ropes, the tools and materials required for each job, and care of rope. Whether you are an eager beginner or an experienced enthusiast, this book will prove an indispensable guide.

About the Author

Geoffrey Budworth has been closely associated with the art, craft and science of tying knots for more than fifty years. Twenty-five years ago he promoted the systematic evaluation of knotted clues preserved at scenes of crime, and the presentation of evidence in the courts, which has resulted in him being called 'the Father of Forensic knotting'. In 1982 he co-founded the International Guild of Knot Tyers and is a past President of the Guild as well as a frequent contributor to its quarterly magazine Knotting Matters.
