f you have ever dreamed of picking Ifresh salad leaves for the evening meal, gathering vine-ripened tomatoes or pulling up your own sweet carrots, this is the book for you. Follow in the footsteps of one of Australia's best-loved cooks and food writers as she reveals the secrets of rewarding kitchen gardening. Be encouraged by detailed gardening notes that explain how adults and children alike can plant, grow and harvest 73 different vegetables, herbs and fruit, and try some of the 250 recipes that will transform your fresh produce into delicious meals. Whether you have a large plot in a suburban backyard or a few pots on a balcony, you will find everything you need to get started in this inspiring and eminently useful garden-to-table guide. Author Biography: Stephanie Alexander is one of Austrlia's most highly regarded food writers, and has written eleven books, including her Australian kitchen bible, The Cook's Companion (which resides in over 400 000 homes), Stephanie's Menus, Stephanie's Seasons and Stephanie Alexander and Maggie Beer's Tuscan Cookbook (co-author). Her most recent book, Kitchen Garden Cooking with Kids, exudes the philosophy that there is no such thing as special food for children: if food is good, everyone will enjoy it regardless of their age, and this principle is followed through in this book, which aims to involve all the family in both gardening and cooking at home. A note from the editor: Both authoritative and distinctly personal, the book is one that all keen and aspiring kitchen gardeners and home cooks will want to own then use everyday.

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 09/11/2009

Just love Stephanie's style. This book is great for the novice and not so novice vege gardener. It is great because it outlines growing tips including timing and then a range of terrific recipes that are easy and tasty without a list of ingredients as long as your arm. For those who want to really make the most of their harvest

Ouch, that's a big price tag, isn't it. To spend this amount you need to know it is owrth it. Well, this one is. It takes you from setting up the garden beds, planting, caring for your crop then harvesting and cooking it. Fantastic recipes, very practical and achieveable gardening ideas, even for old black thumb me......

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 22/02/2010

First of all I was surprised by the size of the book and its cloth cover was 'cute'. When I looked through I thought "great" a recipe book - I wasn't too happy about this price for recipes (and it wasn't even the full price), especially when there was only a small % of the book was setting up a garden at the beginning (this was excellent info for our Aussie climate), so I thought I would browse the recipes! To my surprise there were recipes for each fruit or vege that Stephanie had mentioned, but not only that, it went further into that piece of produce, best time to plant, how often, the soil, the position - WHAT A FANTASTIC BOOK, it certainly surprised me. And to make things better, this book was on a fantastic special through Fishpond - THANK YOU :o)

Absolutely delighted with this purchase.
As a recently retired couple we are keen to set up a vegetable plot from an enthousiastic cooks point of view and this book fits the bill exactly.
We were already Stephanie Alexander fans with a very well used copy of her "Cooks companion", we are sure this purchase will end up equally well used.

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 21/04/2011

This is a beautiful book. The presentation is lovely and it is a joy to sit down with - textured cover, glossy pages, new book smell. Plus the information inside is great. It goes through a range of ways to prepare a kitchen garden plus a recipie for compost lasagne. Then it has produce chapters (fruits and vegies) listed alphabetically. Each chapter gives the gardening details about growing the item, then some recipes/ideas to prepare and eat the item. It is very practical. There are two publications of this book, one published for the southern hemisphere and one for the northern hemisphere. It is difficult to distinguish between the two at a glance, so double checck when purchasing it that you buy the right copy for the area you live in.

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 26/08/2010

I love this book. I received it for Christmas last year and it has become as the title suggests - my kitchen and garden bible. We have used it to help plan our fruit and vegetable gardens as it helpfully suggests the quantity of plants to sow for a family of four. Some absolutely beautiful recipes and very helpful to make the most of times of over-production in the garden - try the fresh basil pesto - YUM...
